What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture, its philosophy and its practice is a large and complex subject which is grounded in the theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine and has been evolving for over 3000 years. It is rooted in the Daoist philosophy of change and growth, balance and harmony.

Chinese Medicine sees the body as part of the Universe, a self - rectifying dynamic unit (whole) where the energies interact and interrelate, their even distribution and flow maintaining health which is defined as a “balanced state”. Any interruption, depletion, or stagnation of this flow in the organs system and their meridians leads to disease. The energy flows can be disrupted by internal factors like emotions, external facors like the environment and weather, and other factors like injuries, trauma, diet and germs. Acupuncture stimulates the natural processes of self healing, helping the body to correct and harmonize itself.

In Five Element/”Phases” Acupuncture the individual is seen as being a unique balance of the movement of the energy of these Elements (fire, earth, metal, water and wood), one of which puts its seal upon us and makes us who we are. The diagnosis is based on understanding each person's core of individuality, potential, and how this has been influenced by the physical and emotional factors. The treatment focuses on strengthening any inner weakness and helping our life to flow smoothly.

The TCM model associates symptoms with patterns and treatment focuses on balancing the functions of the body and its interaction with the outside world. It is widely practiced in modern China, Europe, America and elsewhere. It can be used in assessing constitution, and in helping with problems or symptoms which need to be addressed more quickly

Combining these two approaches the acupuncturist creates integrated, holistic and personalised treatment plan. These focuses on helping individuals resolve their conditions and enhancing their general feeling of wellbeing.

About Cristina Palici
Cristina qualified as an acupuncturist at College of Integrated Chinese Medicine in Reading, having trained in both 5 Element and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).

She has always felt a strong connection with the natural world and the rhythms of nature. Following her natural inclination and her initial work in health care, she developed a deep interest in practices which consider the mind, body and emotional dimensions of an individual. Experience of practicing yoga enhanced this and she was eventually attracted to acupuncture because of its robust methodology, ancient origins and philosophy, and potential for diagnosis and treatment from a holistic perspective. Acupuncture is both a profession and part of her personal journey, which has already led her into unexpected discoveries and reflections.

From earlier activities, Cristina is an experienced General Nurse and has a degree in Biology. Postgraduate research followed which enhanced her range of skills and understanding of biological processes and evolved her skills of observation and analysis. This combination helps her to integrate both Conventional and Eastern views/principles of medicine and has deepened her understanding of body functionality and the processes leading to imbalance and disease.

Part of her acupuncture training included Tui-na massage which is helpful for musculoskeletal conditions and is incorporated in her treatments. As part of her ongoing development, Cristina is undertaking further study which includes completing a Diploma in Tuina, and will soon be travelling to China to study Acupuncture under one of the foremost practitioners of Chinese Medicine.
