Welcome to A Change In Mind

About Maria Doherty

Maria holds an honours degree in Psychology(1977) with a strong leaning towards the work of Jung. She undertook three years of part-time study to obtain her diploma in clinical hypnotherapy and psychotherapy in 1985 while she worked full time in retail management.

Maria takes the best from many schools of psychotherapy and blends them with her knowledge and experience of hypnotherapy, guided visualisation, NLP, counseling, EFT and Reiki, to provide each client with whatever is most effective for bringing about the changes they desire to make in their lives. She brings this eclectic and effective tool box to her coaching practice as well as to therapy. She regards its as essential not to be limited to one school, but to take the best from each and apply it where appropriate. In this way she facilitates effective change in her clients.

Maria spent twenty years in retail management in a broad range of roles, from Service and Logistics, Credit Control, Customer Service, Retail Sales Management and ultimately ten years as a Board Director responsible for Human Resource Management, Training and Development. However esoteric some of the therapeutic practices may seem at first encounter, they are always grounded in the real world in a very down to earth pragmatic way.

Maria believes that although we cannot always chose the external circumstances of our lives , we can chose our attitude towards them. That makes a huge difference in our feeling of being in control of our lives and our day to day happiness.

How we do it.

Hypnosis is a state of mind and body in which you are both deeply relaxed and highly focused at the same time. We slip in and out of this state many times every day without even being aware of it.

Drivers experience this when they suddenly become aware that they are nearly at their destination and do not recall part of the journey, although they were clearly driving safely in a highly aware and focussed manner. They had reached a state of mind, which allowed the unconscious mind or what we might refer to as autopilot to take over.

Some people experience it as a day dreamy state where they become aware that time has passed much faster than they thought because they were “miles away”.

It is a state in which the noisy chatter of the conscious mind slips into the background to allow you to completely focus without distraction.

When you become so completely absorbed in a good book, music, a computer game or a film and there is a time lapse between hearing someone calling you and you responding, you have been in a state of hypnosis which allows you to temporarily screen out all distractions.

One of the best descriptions I have heard about how you feel in hypnosis is that lovely comfortable feeling of being somewhere between sleep and wakefulness, rather like waking slowly in the morning, being aware of the normal sounds of your household but being completely detached from them, just pleasantly drifting.

Hypnosis has been used for centuries to produce such an altered state of mind, a deep relaxation which allows the conscious mind to be sidestepped while the hypnotherapist makes suggestions for change directly to the unconscious mind which is in a state of heightened receptivity.
