SERVICES

Welcome to Burnham Chiropractic Surgery

Matthew originally studied Biochemistry at Coventry University, graduating in 1987 with a Bachelor of Science degree. He subsequently became interested in business management and began a 12-year career in sales and marketing. He decided to become a Chiropractor following a sporting injury for which he received Chiropractic treatment. He freely admits: "At that time, I didn't know what Chiropractors did, but visited a Chiropractor on my GP's suggestion. After a few weeks of treatment, I was able to return to my training schedule, pain free, and with advice on how to prevent further injury. I decided there and then that if I ever had the opportunity, I would study to become a Chiropractor.

That opportunity happened a few years later. Like many British and European Chiropractors, Matthew followed a five-year academic and clinical training programme at the Anglo-European College of Chiropractic(AECC) in Bournemouth. He was a direct entrant into the second year of the course and graduated with a master's degree in Chiropractic. He is registered with the GCC and a member of the BCA. Matthew has an interest in sports injuries and rehabilitation.

Treatment

Chiropractic treatment consists of safe, often gentle, specific adjustments, done by hand, or using specific tools, to free joints and other areas of the body that are not moving properly. The treatment is not usually painful.

By manipulating joints, chiropractors stimulate joint movement receptors. (the body's position sensors which provide feedback to the brain on where the joint is in space.) This stimulation can affect the way the nervous system works. Depending on where the nerve irritation has occurred in the spine, symptoms may include the following:
  • headache or migraine
  • neck pain
  • back pain
  • chest or abdominal pain
  • shoulder, arm, wrist and hand problems
  • leg, knee, ankle and foot problems
This is because the irritation of the nerve in one area can sometimes lead to pain (known as 'referred' pain) in other parts of the body.

To complement your treatment, you will also be given advice on strengthening any weak areas, and effective support methods to do at home, to help relieve your pain as soon as possible.
