Traditional Shaolin Temple Martial Arts - Kung Fu, Lion Dance & Chi Kung

The Nam Yang Pugilistic Association is one of the world's oldest Traditional Chinese Shaolin Temple Martial Arts schools. We teach Southern Shaolin Martial Arts styles including Tiger-Crane Kung Fu and Shaolin Weapons systems, Hard and Soft Chi Kung, Lion and Dragon Dancing and Shuang Yang Pei Ho or the Sun and Frost White Crane Soft Internal Art. We have trained up students to become world ranked martial artists and our Lion and Dragon Dance teams perform around the world. If you think you've got what it takes to be the best, we've got the martial arts instructors and opportunities to take you there!

Founded by the legendary Shaolin Kung Fu Master, Master Ang Lian Huat, today's Nam Yang is still a Traditional Chinese Kung Fu Association and serves a purpose far greater than simply teaching self-defence. As an extended family we work together to organise and develop the study and practice of Traditional Chinese Martial Arts.

Within the UK branch of the Nam Yang Martial Arts Association we have a Headquarters in Epsom and clubs around the country. Our broad syllabus and world-class expertise offer something for everyone, from regular classes to international training holidays in South East Asia!

About the Nam Yang Pugilistic Association

Nam Yang is not only one of the world's oldest martial arts associations, it is also a strong and vibrant organisation. In this section, you can find out about our martial arts association, it's history and opportunities.

What does Nam Yang Pugilistic Association mean?

Chinese calligraphy of Nam Yang Martial Arts Association'Nam Yang' can literally be translated as 'South Seas'. This term was commonly used by the Chinese of Fukien Province to describe South East Asia - to where many of them migrated in the first half of this century. Fukien Province had long been the centre of excellence for the Chinese Internal systems as well as other disciplines such as Feng Shui.

'Pugilism' is an English word meaning 'fist fighting' and was considered a possible translation of 'martial art' in the days before Bruce Lee had opened up the eyes of the West to Kung Fu.

Nam Yang Pugilistic Association can therefore be roughly translated as the 'South East Asia Martial Arts Association'. We also use the title Nam Yang Martial Arts Association.

That's a literal translation of what the words mean, but in truth Nam Yang Martial Arts stands for much more than that.
  1. We hold an authentic lineage to the original Shaolin Martial Arts systems.
When the Manchurians burned the Shaolin Temple in the Qing Dynasty, the Shaolin became an underground organisation passing it's skills from Master to student in secret. Although there is still a Shaolin Temple in China to this day, the original Martial Arts practiced there have moved away centuries ago and the Communist revolution saw them move further afield. Nam Yang Martial Arts is one of the few martial arts schools that can trace a direct lineage of masters back to the original Southern Shaolin Temple.

  2. We treat people of all races and backgrounds equally
In the past, the Shaolin Martial Arts systems were kept a closely guarded secret amongst the Chinese. Women were also rarely accepted as students. As one of the world's first Martial Arts Associations, Nam Yang is proud of the diversity of it's students. We train you based upon the attitude you bring to your learning and the respect for the skills you are trained in, not whether you are white or black, young or old, male or female, rich or poor.

  3. We maintain the Shaolin ethos of brotherhood
The Shaolin has survived for so long because of a strong sense of camaraderie and brotherhood amonst it's members. They look out for each other and helped each other progress in their training and life as best they could. Nam Yang Martial Arts maintains this culture and new students can expect to be privelaged to a range of social opprtunities as well as to have a chance to participate in the running and development of the association.
Whether you are a serious fighter looking to hone your skills in combat or whether you look to Nam Yang Martial Arts to provide you with a source of health, self defence and personal development, we have something for you.
