What is reflexology

Reflexology is a complementary therapy recognised by the NHS, many GP’s and hospices. A reflexology therapist uses their thumbs and fingers to apply pressure to specific points on the hands and feet of the client. Reflexology is based on the theory that there are energy zones that run throughout the body, and link each part of the body with an area on the hands and feet. A reflexology therapist works specific reflex points relevant to each client. This is to clear any blockages, to restore balance to the area and to activate the body's own natural healing process.

Reflexology practice dates back thousands of years with evidence depicted on the Egyptian tomb of Ankmahor in 2350 BC and in ancient Chinese texts.

Reflexology treatment

The first visit begins with a short discussion about medical history and lifestyle factors. You will then be asked to remove your footwear and relax into a comfortable reclining chair. Once settled I gently cleanse and refresh the feet or hands using wipes before dusting with corn starch powder to help work the reflex points. The treatment then commences using a variety of techniques to work the reflex points. The treatment is generally calming and relaxing. However, there may be some reflex points that feel sensitive. This is an indication of imbalance and through working these areas; it can affect the corresponding organ or system of the body.

The treatment usually lasts between 45-60 minutes. After the initial treatment most people feel a sense of well-being and relaxation. Sometimes people experience an increase in symptoms such as feeling lethargic or emotional following treatment. However, this is temporary (24-48hrs) and is a sign that the treatment is working and that your body is going through the process of cleaning itself of impurities, toxins and imbalances.

Following the first treatment, depending on how the body reacts, a course of treatment may be recommended.

Hopi ear candling

Also known as Thermo Auricular Therapy, this technique is used to treat many conditions of the ear, nose and throat areas. This is an ancient form of therapy taken from the Hopi Indians of North Arizona, USA and means 'peaceful people'.

A specialised candle is placed in the ear and lit. As the candle burns, the rising air creates a mild suction action which helps to loosen compacted earwax. As the ingredients of the candle are vapourised, some of the air in the candle gets heavier and travels downwards into the ear. This creates gentle sound and pressure waves which gently massage the eardrum. This movement effects all of the ear structures, helping to regulate and balance pressure in the ears and upper respiratory tract.

Following the candling, the treatment is finished with a face massage. The massage enhances the effects of the candling, increases circulation to the head area and helps to promote lymphatic drainage.

Acupressure chair massage

This immediate stress buster works to relieve tired aching muscles in the short term and, due to its ability to relieve stress, maintains overall health in the long term.

The sequence is based on the techniques of Shiatsu and Anma, traditional Japanese bodywork systems. It incorporates over sixty specific stress release points on the head, neck, shoulders, arms and back. The treatment leaves you feeling relaxed and calm, yet energised and alert. Received fully clothed.
