Conditions Treated

Corns and Callous
Callous is a yellowish plaque of hard skin and a corn is an inverted cone of similarly hard skin which is pushed into the skin. Both conditions develop in response to rubbing, pressure and friction.

Verrucae
Verrucae or warts are benign tumors of the skin and are induced by human pepilloma virus. Fragments of infected skin from one person enters the skin of another person stepping on it; in either communal areas, swimming area etc. Fragments of the infected skin enter the skin through small abrasions or a micro-injury and may be helped on their way by pressure or friction. Successful transmission depends on the presence of breach in the skin, the viability of the virus and the susceptibility of the host.

Athletes Foot

This is a common condition caused by fungus. It occurs in three areas on the foot:
  1. in between the toes: it presents as a white moist cracked or peeling area of skin with redness and intense itching.
  2. in the arch area: It presents as small red vesicles (tiny blister like) with inflammation at the periphery.
  3. on the heel: It presents as very thickened skin.

Fungal infection can be picked up from communal areas:~ pools, showers and changing rooms or any where one walks bare footed. Once the feet gets contaminated by fungus the warm dark and sweaty environment in the shoes provides the ideal breeding ground for fungus.

If left untreated it can spread to the toe nails causing thick yellow crumbly nails.

Heel pain (Plantar Fasciitis)
Plantar Fascittis is a common problem, which can affect people of any age. Frequent symptoms include a dull intermittent heel pain which is often worse:
  • rising in the morning,
  • starting a sporting activity, or
  • when starting to walk after prolonged sitting.

The symptoms can come on suddenly but normally develop gradually over a period of months.

Certain activities may cause/aggravate the pain:
  • Sudden increase in activity
  • Increase in sports training
  • Recent weight gain
  • Changing from high heels to flat shoes

The condition is caused by inflammation of the plantar fascia (a band of ligament that attaches at the heel and extends upto the toes) which helps in supporting the arch.

Heel Fissures
These are the cracks that occur on the heel due to excessively dry skin or excessively moist skin. This can also sometimes bleed and be very painful to walk on.

Nail conditions
Thick Nails

Nails become thick due to:
  • a single trauma to the nail plate,
  • repetitive trauma from ill-fitting foot ware
  • increase in age
  • due to the fungal infection of the nail plate

Ingrowing toenail

This is a condition where the nail plate pierces the skin on the sides of the nail plate. Infection may or may not be present with this condition.
This condition occurs due to:
  • improper nail cutting,
  • trauma to the nail plate,
  • narrow footwear .

Nail Fungus
Fungal infection of the toenail is a common foot problem.
It presents as:
  • thick, yellowish, brown brittle and crumbly nail that may not be attached to the nail bed. Discolouration may be seen initially as a streak extending from the tip of the nail to the base of the nail,
  • white patches on the surface of the nail plate.

If left untreated can spread to the other toenails sometimes affecting all the toenails.
