Rachel Ackroyd is an experienced Chiropractor and Sports massage therapist that can help you live a pain-free lifestyle. Her training first begun in 1998 when she begun studying a BSc Hons in Sport & Exercise Science. Once she completed this she went onto complete a BSc Hons in Chiropractic and whilst training she also completed a diploma in Holistic massage and sports injury and massage. The combination of her 2 degrees and diplomas has given her the ability to help her patients with numerous conditions. She uses a combination of soft tissue work and chiropractic to get the best results for her patients.

About Rachel

I have been interested in sport since a young age and played hockey at a competitve level for the last 15 years.

I graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Sport & Exercise Science in 2002 but felt i needed a new direction, having suffered with a back condition as a adolescent I went on to train as a chiropractor at the McTimoney college of Chiropractic and graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Chiropractic.

During the 5 year degree i gained an ITEC diploma in Holistic massage and an APNT diploma in Sports Injuries and massage because I believed that combining Chiropractic and massage could only benefit my patients but that either technique used individually could also give great results.

Although I am interested in sports Injuries I also like to work with a variety of patients of all different ages and backgrounds.

How can a Chiropractor help you?

Chiropractic is a hands-on treatment; the practitioner uses the hands to adjust the spine and joints within the body to ensure correct alignment so that the nervous system can work efficiently giving you optimal health.

Your spinal column is made up of 24 movable vertebrae, the sacrum and coccyx which house the spinal column that transmits nerve information throughout the rest of the body. If the spinal column becomes misaligned then the nerves may become compressed or impinged resulting in pain and discomfort. The most common cause of this is poor posture, incorrect lifting, falls, car accidents and sporting injuries.

McTimoney Chiropractic is a gentle holistic treatment. It is gentle because it is an extremely light method; the adjustments rely on speed and accuracy in which they are performed rather than force. It is holistic because the chiropractor will assess the whole body for misalignments and then adjust accordingly.

A combination of chiropractic and sports massage is often used when required but either treatment can also be used individually

Our Sports Massage Treatment

Sports massage is a deep muscle tissue massage using oil and rapid movements, particularly of the forearm, elbow and wrist. This massage is for professional or amateur athletes, or for anyone seeking total relaxation.

Sports massage can be used to treat specific sporting injuries by reducing the pain or can be used for relaxation by reducing tension within the muscles built up from ordinary day to day life.

A combination of chiropractic and sports massage is often used when required but either treatment can also be used individually.

What to expect on your first visit

Consultation

The Initial consultaion will take place at one of my clinic rooms; the most convenient one for you. They are all set in a friendly and professional atmosphere with the aim of getting you back to optimal health.

The 1st consultation with a McTimoney Chiropractor usually lasts around 1 hour. This involves taking a full case history regarding your general health backround. Including the details of your symptoms as well as details of your lifestyle including occupation and hobbies etc...

Once a general picture has been gained of how the body is being used on a day to day basis the next step is to find out whether the condition is musculoskeletal or neurological. The use of neurological and orthopaedic tests can normally include/exclude either of these factors. Also it is important to exclude any non-spinal pathologies

Treatment Plan

Once it is deemed safe to treat, a treatment plan can be recommended and discussed. The number of treatments you require can vary considerably depending on:

  • Age: you heal slower as you get older.
  • Nature of your condition: a muscular back strain will heal quicker that sciatica.
  • Duration of the condition: a muscular back strain that occured yesterday will heal quicker than sciatica for the last 20 years.

Treatments usually last around 30 minutes and typically most patients need between 2-5 treatments at weekly intervals which then will gradually get spaced out until a maintenance plan can be adopted to ensure the condition does not return.
