Craniosacral Therapy - Reflexology - Maternity Reflexology

Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is an exceptionally gentle therapy that it is suitable for babies, children, and the elderly, as well as adults and people in fragile or acutely painful conditions. Craniosacral Therapy can aid almost any condition, raising vitality and improving the body's capacity for self-repair.

Craniosacral Therapy is a non invasive ‘hands on’ therapy working mainly around the head (cranium) and the base of the spine (sacrum). Sensitive hands engage with subtle movements of cerebrospinal fluid around the brain and spinal cord. Although the contact is light, the effects can be profound and long lasting. Practitioners are trained to place their hands gently on areas of the body, listening to the rhythmic flow of the living system - the central nervous system, bones, fluids and tissues. The body's movement towards a deeper sense of natural equilibrium is encouraged and supported.

How can Craniosacral Therapy help?

Craniosacral Therapy can help alleviate a wide range of problems. Some of the conditions successfully worked with are:
  • arthritis, asthma, anxiety, autism,
  • back pain, breathing disorders, birth trauma, bronchitis,
  • cerebral palsy, colic, compression of the skull due to a difficult birth,
  • depression, dental problems, digestive problems, drug withdrawal, dyslexia,
  • ear and eye problems, emotional problems, exhaustion,
  • fatigue, fall or injury , frozen shoulder,
  • headaches, hip disorders, hormonal imbalances, hyperactivity,
  • IBS, infertility, immune system disorders, insomnia,
  • learning difficulties, lethargy,
  • ME, menstrual pain, menopause, migraines, muscular aches and sprains,
  • neck disorders,
  • PMS, period pains, persistent body pain, problems during and after pregnancy, post-operative effects
  • RSI, re-integration after accidents,
  • sciatica, sinusitis, spinal curvatures and problems, sports injuries, stress related illnesses,
  • TMJ (jaw) disorders, tension, tinnitus and middle ear problems,
  • visual disturbances, whiplash injuries, and many more.

Accidents such as road accidents, falls or fractures can leave structural imbalances. Post-operative or dental trauma often lead to imbalances that have wide ranging effects on the whole body. These can lead to restricted movement, headaches, digestive problems, mood changes amongst other symptoms. Craniosacral Therapy can help address these, by releasing underlying stress patterns held in the tissues.

What to expect ~ Craniosacral Therapy Treatment

The treatment involves lying fully clothed on a professional couch. A treatment session lasts approximately 45 to 60 minutes. The initial treatment takes a little longer allowing time for consultation and discussion. At your first appointment you will be asked questions about your health and lifestyle. This in an important aspect of the treatment as it is beneficial for the therapist to have an understanding of all factors that may be affecting your health, including how you feel physically and emotionally.
The first thing you will probably notice is a sense of deep relaxation, which will generally last throughout the session. You may feel heat, cold, tingling, internal movement or pulsating. Other times you may not feel a thing, as the therapy works beneath the threshold of sensitivity. Sometimes it may take a few days for the effects to come into your awareness. With subsequent treatments this release of tension often extends into everyday life. The work can address physical aches and pains, acute and chronic disease, emotional or psychological disturbances, or simply help to develop well-being.

Craniosacral therapy is not a quick fix. It is a process of opening up, and getting in touch with the core patterns within your system, and allowing them to release over a period of time. Although symptoms can go immediately, deeper patterns of discomfort may take longer to clear. This depends on how firmly your system is holding on to them. Craniosacral therapy is client-led, with the body setting the priorities. Your body will set the pace of the work, so you remain comfortable, in control and able to integrate the changes that occur. Sometimes the benefits are not immediately noticeable but become obvious on returning to a familiar environment. The work can involve resolution of past events and is often profoundly relaxing, deeply moving and exhilarating.

Treatments work on all levels easing physical, emotional and mental issues with long-term benefits of an improved immune system, greater health, energy and vitality.

How many Treatments?

This varies from person to person, often some effects are felt after just one treatment but a series of treatments may be needed to make a significant change in the condition. Your body sets the priorities and you may find the reason you came for a treatment is not what changes first. Also some people find that it can take a few sessions to get used to what they are feeling. For these reasons, you may need to consider having a series of treatments to gain the full benefit of Craniosacral Therapy and its cumulative affects.

Boosting Fertility with Reflexology

Reflexology benefits in improving chances of conception and fertility:
  • Reflexology encourages deep relaxation, alleviating symptoms of stress and tension so that conception is more likely to take place.
  • Reflexology encourages equilibrium of all the body systems and as a consequence creates the right environment for conception to take place.
  • Reflexology promotes regular glandular functioning and stimulation of the reproductive system. Reflexology also improves circulation, aids elimination of toxins, improves muscle tone and increases energy levels.

You may wish to ensure you are well prepared before trying for a baby, or you may have experienced problems with conceiving. Whichever situation applies to you, Reflexology can help prepare your body achieve a healthier state of balance and readiness for conception. Lifestyle and dietary advice will be given to complement the Reflexology sessions, and will be an important component of your treatment.

It is beneficial for both partners to receive treatment, increasing your chances of conceiving, encouraging the optimum environment for conception to take place. This therapy may also help with male infertility, caused by a low sperm count or lifestyle issues. Again, lifestyle and dietary advice will be a crucial part of your treatment.

How can Reflexology increase my chances of conceiving?

  • Reducing stress. Women trying unsuccessfully to become pregnant may have high levels of stress and anxiety. When under stress we experience several neuro-chemical changes which can alter the ordered release of hormones that regulate the maturation and release of an egg. Many doctors agree that over 75% of our health problems can be caused by stress and tension. Reflexology can improve nerve
  • Treating the spine and corresponding spinal nerves which affect the whole reproductive area.
  • Working on the lymphatic system to stimulate the immune system, important particularly when considering the importance of healthy mucous membranes.
  • Cleansing, particularly the large intestine and the liver.
  • It is recommended to have Reflexology treatments weekly for a minimum period of 6-8 weeks, preferably longer. Weekly treatments should be followed with, ideally a treatment at fortnightly intervals.

Treatment during pregnancy

In the womb, babies take in both nourishment and emotional responses from the mother via the umbilical cord. Therefore treating the mother indirectly also aids the baby. Although both have a separate nervous and blood circulatory system, the mother and her developing baby communicate through the nervous and hormonal links. This is especially the case on an emotional level so that if mother is distressed, her stress hormones cross the placenta. Prolonged stress is known to affect the immune system. In babies exposed to maternal distress and a complicated birth there seems to be a predisposition to recurrent infections and allergies, especially when there is a family history of allergy.

Can Reflexology help prepare me for labour?

Reflexology has been recognised as having a particularly high success rate in the area of labour outcome - many women have experienced labours of only 2-3 hours after undergoing Reflexology therapy during their pregnancy. In addition, Reflexology is becoming more popular for the purpose of pain relief during labour.

There have been several studies within the last few years of which many shed some positive light on the potential effects of Reflexology on both labour duration and the intensity of pain experienced. Studies have found that regular Reflexology during pregnancy can bring about shorter, less painful labour with a reduced chance of intervention for example use of forceps, ventouse or caesarean section.
The findings of the Gentofte study were supported by a further study carried out by Dr Gowri Motha at the Jeyrani Birth Centre on the effects of Reflexology on pregnant women. Thirty-seven pregnant women completed a course of 10 Reflexology treatments with remarkable effects. The average length of the first stage of labour was 5 hours whereas the text book average is 16 - 24 hours; the second stage of labour lasted an average of 16 minutes compared to the text book expectancy of 1 - 2 hours, and only 5.4% of the women who had Reflexology treatment required emergency caesarean section compared to an average of 13% in Newham district which was the district where the study was conducted.
