Pilates Mat Classes

It is best described as a mixture of body conditioning to strengthen the muscles (particularly the deep core muscles), Alexander technique to address posture and reduce unnecessary tension in the body and yoga to lengthen the muscles.

It is a workout that recognises individual needs and builds strength without adding bulk and balancing that strength with flexibility. It relies on strengthening the postural muscles which stabilise the torso. By correcting muscle imbalance, faulty muscle recruitment patterns and bad habits, the body is brought back into alignment. Pilates avoids the muscle and ligament damage associated with many fitness regimes and plays a key role in rehabilitation programmes for many sports injuries as well as helping to improve back and neck problems. Its consistent success rate in solving such problems has brought it to the attention of physiotherapists and surgeons alike.

Each exercise is based on the 8 principles of :- Relaxation, Co-ordination, Stamina, Alignment, Breathing, Concentration, Centering and Flowing Movements.

Joseph Pilates method is almost 100 years old and is suitable for everybody regardless of age, fitness level or medical condition.

Pilates Machine Classes

Once a good grounding in the basic matwork technique has been attained, then Pilates machine work may be undertaken. These sessions are suitable for private clients wishing to progress from matwork and undergo more challenging work. Machine lessons are also suitable for remedial exercise programmes following a course of physiotherapy or similar treatment. The client works with a combination of machines including the Reformer, Ladder Barrel, Wall Unit and Wunda Chair.

pilatesmachineclassesinn_200The Pilates body is long, lean and strong – slender but with a hidden strength under a healthy muscle tone without bulky muscles or bulging biceps. Through the prescribed exercise routines, the body is re-trained to work efficiently with minimal effort and no tension. Stamina and co-ordination are improved. The body comes into perfect balance and alignment, with the result that the immune system is stimulated and the level of general health very often rises because the internal organs can now sit and function correctly. After working with the method for a period of time, many people see an increase in height as a direct result of improved posture.

Gyrotonic ®

Currently being hailed as Yoga for the 21st century, it is best described as a mixture of yoga, tai chi, gymnastics and dance. Invented by Juliu Horvath, a renowned Romanian ballet dancer, it uses three dimensional, circular movements on hand crafted wooden equipment with friction, spring and weight resistance, while employing yoga breathing techniques. Although there are several machines, the Gyrotonic ® tower is the machine most commonly used.

Juliu became injured during his dancing career and tried all sorts of therapies but to no avail. He then set about working on this own body, developing his own system of exercise which completely healed his problems.

He brought the method back to the States where he taught mat classes to dancers and actors. From then on he began to develop his own machine to assist people in gaining strength and flexibility. There are now fifty studios in New York and three in Aspen whilst others are popping up in Spain, Germany, Italy and Paris.

Gyrotonic ® is fast gaining credibility over in the U.K now thanks to the likes of Madonna and other celebrities practising the method. As Gyrotonic ® is low impact, it is suitable for people with injuries. A wide range of ages and abilities are able to practise the method as there are several levels to the exercises. It is designed to create flexibility and strength and it cleanses the system and detoxifies the body.

Gyrokinesis ®

Gyrokinesis ® is the mat based version of the exercises. So how does a typical class start? Before you even begin to exercise you literally “wake up” the body. This entails sitting on a stool as you work your way from your head to your toes pulling your eyelids, squashing your ears, massaging your neck and stomach, beating your legs and bottom and stretching your toes amongst other things.

Sounds crazy? You would be surprised, it really does work! You feel energised and alive afterwards and then the real work starts. There are exercises to tone and stretch each part of the body to try and bring the body into balance and correct alignment. Just twenty minutes a day can eliminate persistent stiffness and stress induced back problems we often experience in our daily lives.

The workout is good for sufferers of arthritis, neck stiffness and overall joint problems. Clients can expect to achieve increased spinal mobility and strength, improvement in co-ordination, long lean muscle development, relief from chronic injuries and prevention of future ones.

Providing relief from many of the uncomfortable symptoms of pregnancy, Gyrotonic ® also helps to build stamina for the birthing process and increases blood and circulation to the baby. Postpartum, there is a quick gain in energy levels, abdominal strength and general toning.

Yoga Class

We offer instruction in three major yoga styles: Ashtanga, Sivananda and Iyengar style yoga.

Ashtanga yoga is more dynamic with an emphasis on continual movement and flows from one asana (posture) to another in sequence.

Hatha yoga is a more general style of yoga. Postures may be held for a short or lengthened period of time with focus on correct technique and alignment. Props such as blocks, straps and ropes may be used to develop correct body posture and alignment.

Sivananda is a more all round style of yoga, neither possessing the vinyasa (flow) of Ashtanga nor the intricate alignment of Iyengar. The benefits of yoga are to calm and focus the mind, to induce deep relaxation, reduce stress. It helps to stretch and tone the muscles and through specific breathwork, to energise the body.

All our yoga instructors have trained and spent extensive time in India studying the various methods and techniques.

Emma and Kay have undertaken the Sivananda yoga teacher training at the Sivananda ashram in the Himalayas. Emma has also studied with the famous guru and yogi, Patabi Jois (now aged 92) at the world renowned Ashtanga yoga centre in Mysore, Southern India.

Kids Yoga

Developed for the over fives, what better introduction into a healthy lifestyle than kids yoga? Watch your child gain stamina, control, flexibility and strength. Classes are taught in a fun environment with stories and role play.

Mental concentration, energy levels and alertness are also improved. Children develop creativity, intuition and self-expression and their confidence improves.

Our yoga games are designed to help children feel grounded, develop a firm stance, improve their posture and find their balance whilst making new friends.

The breathing exercises teach children to breathe properly adn expand their lung capacity, increasing endurance. The relaxation games help children understand not only how to exercise their bodies, but how to relax them.

You will find that these sessions help children balance their energy levels - after a yoga session, children who are extremely active will remain calm and relaxed, while quiet children will become more alert. Finally, many of the games give children a better understanding of how their bodies work and move.

Introduce your child to the joy of fitness whilst building a strong, flexible body and mind.
