SERVICES

Welcome to Open Space Therapies

I am a dramatherapist, registered with the Health Professions Council, and a member of the British Association of Dramatherapists. I am based in Bath at the Open House Centre where I run Open Space Dramatherapy, as well as a small private practice for adults and children.

Open Space Dramatherapy is part of The Open House Centre’s outreach programme and is funded by charitable grants. It was established in 2003 as a service that offers therapy to vulnerable or disadvantaged members of the community who would otherwise be unable to afford therapeutic help. At present Open Space Dramatherapy provides therapy to children in local schools and postnatal support groups for new mothers.

Open Space Dramatherapy follows a system of evidence based practice and adheres to the code of ethics and CPD requirements specified by the Health Professions Council.

What is dramatherapy?

Dramatherapy is a form of psychotherapy that aims to help you work through your difficulties using the arts as a tool. Sometimes it is difficult to find the right words to convey a feeling or understand a difficult situation, but images, pictures, actions and other non-verbal forms of communication might help you to express something that feels too difficult to discuss or explain.

In dramatherapy we use symbols and metaphor as a means of communicating feelings and thoughts as they can help you work with sensitive issues without feeling overwhelmed. For example, you might create an image out of small everyday objects to describe how the different parts of your life fit together, or you might use role play or drama to explore feelings that would be too uncomfortable to express directly as yourself. Unlike the ‘talking’ therapies, dramatherapy encourages you to find your own way of communicating and helps you work through problems in a creative way.

You do not need to be artistic or ‘good at drama’ to participate in dramatherapy. Simply a willingness to think about your feelings and engage with the process is all that is required.

If you are thinking about dramatherapy for yourself or someone you know, and would like further information, please contact me for more details.
