What is “Health”?

Let food by thy medicine and let thy medicine be food!

The word ‘health’ was derived from the old English word ‘hoelth’, which meant a state of being sound, and was generally used to infer a soundness of the body. Prior to the period of the somewhat enigmatic physician known as Hippocrates (c 460-377 BCE, or more appropriately, from around 5 BCE), health was perceived as a divine gift. Hippocrates was credited with pioneering the move away from divine notions of health, and using observation as a basis for acquiring health knowledge. He was credited with encouraging a focus on environmental sanitation, personal hygiene and, in particular, balanced diets – “let food be thy medicine; and let thy medicine be food”.

What is “Chiropractic”?

Chiropractic is a fast-growing independent health care profession in the United Kingdom.

In the UK there are over 2,000 practicing chiropractors. If you ask most people what is the primary concern of chiropractors they will usually answer, fixing bad backs or relieving back pain. This idea has become popular but is not necessarily strictly correct.

The World Federation of Chiropractic defines chiropractic as “A health profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, and the effects of these disorders on the function of the nervous system and general health. There is an emphasis on manual treatments including spinal manipulation or adjustment.”

The practice of chiropractic focuses on the relationship between structure (primarily the spine) and function (as coordinated by the nervous system) and how that relationship affects the preservation and restoration of health.
