Welcome to The Hockley Practice
We are a husband and wife team who run two well established practices in Essex. We are keenly involved in the profession having been the founders of our local branch and hold the positions of chairman and secretary.
The South Essex branch organises training courses for Society members in Essex and we are also involved with the Society at a national level.
We pride ourselves on running clinics with a friendly family atmosphere which helps put patients at ease. We are supported by excellent receptionists and two dedicated associates.
Chiropody / Podiatry - the difference?
Actually - NONE!
Prior to the act of 2003, anyone could call themselves a chiropodist, whether or not they had had any training or experience in this profession. The only difference between the chiropodists who had successfully completed the 3 year full time training and the others, was the allowed use of the title State Registered. The public however didn’t notice a difference in the titles and were not able to make an informed choice as to what sort of training their chosen practitioner had. This failed to protect the public.
Despite the Society of Chiropodists lobbying government for years the profession remained unprotected until 2003.
In the meantime, those of us in the profession who carried the title of State Registered Chiropodist voted to change the title Chiropodist, to that used by our American friends, Podiatrist. This was in the hope of getting this new title protected. Unfortunately, the process of protection of title was too slow and both titles were starting to be used by all.
Since the formation of the Health Professions Council (HPC) in 2002 by the government, only people deemed to be competent in the practice of Chiropody can now use the title along with that of Podiatrist.
