About Richard Xerri

Sports massage has slowly become quite established in the UK. Australia were early admirers of such treatment. While the UK health professionals slowly lost touch of the manual therapies there was an emerging growth in the athletic community of such work and the recovery that could be gained from addressing the soft tissue component of the body (muscle, tendon, ligament). There is still much neglect of this component and this puts the Massage therapist with good diagnostic skills in a good position to restore function and good health to not only athletes but anybody with reduced ability to move smoothly, economically and with reduced pain.

Treatment

Sports massage has been recognised as a natural therapy for several years now. The days of it being on the fringe of thereupeutic benefit are well and truly over. With this has come many therapists wanting an alternative career and the resultant growth of the 'sports massage therapist' industry. Although this has brought the therapy to the wider audience it has also cheapended the roots of true antomical and physiological study. Combined with my interest in coaching and athlete progression I have a good background to the psychological and emotional benefit of sport. The constant retraining and study leads me to my 2nd year of a BSc Physiotherapy degree at St George's Medical School in Tooting.

Sports Massage utilises the roots of traditional massage techniques but the emphasis is placed on the full functioning and, therefore, the limb or body part being in total harmony with the fuction it is required to do. e.g - hurdle. The constant overloading from a young age will place much stress and strain on the body over many years. Sports massage can bring big differences in injury rehabilitation, sprains, strains, long term back and hip conditions and neck and shoulder tension. Combined with the empowerment of the individual to take good care of themselves it is my primary aim to restore and maintain a healthy body and long term attainment of sporting and physical movement. Without this the long term effects can be debilitating, tiring and lead to wide range of negatives effects. Whatever age or level of sport or indeed your behavioural and environmental surroundings, Sports massage can have a place in your body maintenence programme.

Working with other therapies and using skills learnt from other treatment modalities e.g Pilates it is the aim of myself to restore the body to one of function and flow. Words such as flow, vitality and energy balance are often neglected in traditional Physiotherapy and in Sports massage work. It is my belief that the Eastern approaches play a big part in harmony of the body from all perspectives and this is often brought into play with my long term clients due to my history in Thai massage work.
