Biography
I am a UKCP registered psychotherapist and hold an MA in Gestalt Psychotherapy from the University of North London.
I started my training in counselling in the late 1980s. I worked for a local counselling service from 1992, then established my practice at my home in Haslemere in 1996 and at the Gestalt Centre London in 1998. My main psychotherapy training has been at The Gestalt Centre London, where I graduated with an MA in the year 2000.
In addition to this training, I have attended workshops on couples therapy with the internationally renowned trainers Joseph Zinker and Sonia Nevis. My work is also influenced by the additional training I have had with Carl Hodges, (past president of the New York Institute of Gestalt Therapy) and Malcolm Parlett - both acknowledged experts on gestalt field theory, a way of looking at relationships between people and events.
This is a second career for me. After taking a degree in Business Studies, I worked in industry and commerce for many years before starting my training in counselling and psychotherapy.

Group work enables participants to gain a deeper understanding of themselves and their relationship with others. From time to time I will be running weekend groups either to give a 'taster' of what Gestalt Therapy is about or on a specific theme e.g. coping with life's stresses, self-esteem etc. I also plan to run ongoing groups on one evening a week for about 10 weeks in Surrey for more general self-development. If you think you may be interested in participating in these, please send an e-mail to margaret@4psychotherapy asking me to add your name to the mailing list and letting me know your areas of interest.
What might be gained
What are the aims of counselling or psychotherapy?
The aims of counselling and psychotherapy are to help clients to be more of their true selves, to be appropriately self-reliant, and to take control of their own destiny. The sessions should give people the opportunity to talk things through with someone who will not give them advice, but who will try to help them find their own way of coping, understanding or changing.
Although nowadays either psychotherapy or counselling can be called 'short term', many people think of counselling as providing shorter term help with a specific problem whereas psychotherapy tends to be more wide-ranging in helping clients to address more general issues of personal development.
Who can benefit?
Counselling and psychotherapy may be helpful for personal growth and development or for a very wide variety of problems in which people experience distress. These include stress, anxiety, depression, panic attacks, difficulties in relationships at home or at work, low self-esteem, loss of vitality, lack of assertiveness, and psychosomatic disorders. The problems for which the talking therapies may help are too numerous to mention and you should not worry if your particular concern is not listed here. Choose the counsellor or therapist you think you may want to see and discuss your concern with them.
Whatever the specific reason clients enter therapy, the movement is towards improved relationships and increased energy and enjoyment of life. People who benefit most from the experience tend to be those who are willing to be active participants in the process of change and are open and self-reflective .
