Welcome to Yoga in York

What is yoga?

Yoga is an ancient self-therapy to "still the thought waves of the mind", bringing inner peace. Yoga means the union of body, mind and spirit. It is not a religion.

What are the benefits of yoga?

Stretching, breathing and relaxing all improve the circulation of the body's energy. Improved energy levels bring better health. Postures are the best known aspect of yoga. They promote flexibility and strength to allow you to stay still, alert and comfortable for meditation. Meditation is the practice of focusing the mind.

Why is yoga good exercise?

30 mins of moderate exercise is recommended for adults. Yoga improves energy and stamina. It gives strong, toned muscles, improves posture, confidence and appearance. It also improves mental health and reduces risks of heart disease, stroke or osteoporosis. Yoga is an ideal exercise -it is enjoyable, inexpensive, balanced, non pollutiing, works every muscle and cell, can be done regularly, is low impact, can be done in groups or alone, requires little space or equipment, is understandable, interesting, safe, gives gradual progression, is non-competitive, benefits body, mind and spirit, and is appropriate to the individual who keeps in control.

What sort of yoga do you teach?

Hatha yoga, which is mainly postures, breath awareness and relaxation. I am trained by the British Wheel of Yoga. Each week I choose a theme. Examples are yoga for back pain, concentration, balance, sleep or the time of year. Themes are often chosen in response to requests by students. I have a special interest in Ayurveda which means life knowledge.



Private Tuition

Transform your energy, peace of mind and quality of life with personal yoga sessions to suit to your constitution and needs. Balanced exercise and meditation helps to control mood swings naturally. In a one to one yoga lesson we develop a personal practice plan based on questionnaires on your constitution, physical and mental health and reasons for practicing yoga. The plan can involve postures, breathing, relaxation, concentration, meditation, study, positive actions, spiritual connection and goals.

Back care, pregnancy and post natal yoga are my specialities, but clients have also found private lessons helpful for many other issues.

Private lessons can involve Reiki healing, a gentle and relaxing hands on healing method to which I have trained to 2nd degree level.

Approximately three to four sessions are recommended to establish a home practice. Relaxation home practice can be augmented with the Relax with Anna Semlyen CD

As well as individuals, companies employ me to come to their workplace. Clients have included Corus Rail, CPP, DEFRA, The English Language Centre and the Environment Agency. Please ring or email Anna to discuss your requirements.

Private lessons and yoga plans are £35 per hour at my home, 24 Grange St, off Fulford Road and £40 per hour within York's ring road if I travel to you. A block of 5 classes is £150.

Clothing must not restrict movement. Do not eat for 1.5 hours before a session.
