Questions

What is homeopathy?
Homeopathy is well established. Its use was developed by Samuel Hanemann a German Doctor. It is based on the principle of "like cures like". A substance that causes symptoms in a healthy person can be used to treat the same symptoms in someone who is ill.

What illness might be helped by homeopathy?
Homeopathy can be used to treat patients displaying mental, emotional or physical symptoms of any kind. The whole picture is important. People might seek help if they have eczema, or menstrual difficulties, or insomnia...... the list is endless. Pregnant women and babies respond very well.

How are remedies made?
Minerals, plants and animals are the source of the remdies. Each substance is passed through a series of dilutions and subjected to vigorous shaking. This is carried out in homeopathic pharmacies. The final remedy is so dilute it lacks the harmful element of the substance. Animals are not deliberately killed or harmed in remedy production.

How do remedies work?
There is abundant proof that the remedies do work but homeopaths and scientists have yet to discover why they work. The remedies are believed to act as a signal which energises the the body's self healing powers.

What are remedies like to take?
Remedies are very palatable in the form of sugar tablets or drops.

Can I continue to take prescribed medication from my doctor?
It is very important that you do continue with your prescribed medication. However some people find that as they improve with homeopathic remedies it is possible to reduce the medication under the guidance of their doctor.

Are the remedies safe?
The remedies have been diluted to remove the harmful component of the substance. Thus there are no known lasting side effects.

What can I expect from treatment?
The initial consultation is very thorough. Lasting up to 1 1/2 hours. Questions are asked about all sorts of things from sleep, to diet, to features of the chief complaint. The Homeopath may then want to work on the choice of remedy but should send it out within a week. Sometimes on taking the remedy patient's symptoms appear to intensify for a short time. This is a good sign that the remedy is taking effect. Sometimes a cold or rash appears as the body is pushing out any disturbance. Sometimes old symptoms reappear. These all pass and are part of the healing process. Any concerns can be easily discussed with your Homeopath.
