Acupuncture

What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is part of the traditional medicine of China which also includes the use of herbal preparations, exercises for health and massage. It is a method of improving your health and healing illness by using very fine needles to stimulate channels of energy running beneath the surface of the skin. Although Acupuncture has been in continuous use in China for well over 3,000 years it has undergone somewhat of a revival in the past 30 years with many new applications such as acupuncture analgesia used in operations, ear acupuncture and electro-acupuncture.

Often illnesses that respond poorly to drug therapy are those for which acupuncture is most appropriate. At other times it is used where drug therapy would be inadvisable due to side effects.

Diagnosis and Treatment
Acupuncture unlike Western Medicine treats the whole person. In order to understand the pattern of disharmony or imbalance of vital energy causing a person’s illness, the acupuncturist needs detailed information about the person’s symptoms, medical history, diet, lifestyle and so on. The acupuncturist will also need to feel the pulses on both wrists and examine the tongue.

By inserting needles into selected acupuncture points on the body, energy can be summoned to where it is needed and dispersed from areas of blockage and congestion. The picture opposite shows some of the acupuncture points and channels running beneath the skin.

Acupuncturists use hair-fine needles (see opposite), consequently the discomfort is slight. After a few seconds there is usually a dull ache or a tingling feeling which shows that the energy is being stimulated. This wears off after a minute or so. On average about 12 sterile needles are used and left in place for 20 to 30 minutes. The initial diagnosis plus the first treatment takes up to one hour. Subsequent treatments take 40-45 minutes each.

Because Chinese medicine treats the whole person’s general state of health, the person may sleep better, feel more relaxed, feel warmer and so on. In general the older the illness the longer it takes to cure. Acupuncture is not a ‘miracle’ treatment’ the effects are cumulative over a course of treatment. One or two treatments is rarely enough. More commonly results begin to show after four to six sessions. When a good improvement has been made the treatments are progressively less frequent until just the occasional preventative treatment is needed.
