SERVICES

A professional and friendly service tailored to your individual needs.

When you come for reflexology you will enter into a partnership that is client led. You will find that your health and well-being will improve so you are able to move forward and look to the future with confidence

You will discover that you relax during a treatment and continue to feel relaxed afterwards. You will also notice that tension is relieved and circulation has improved. I specialise in helping the body to detox, and this is especially helpful when treating digestive problems and improving immunity, so all the body’s systems and processes can function more effectively. You will feel more energetic and focused which will help you to make great choices for improving your health. For example you might consider making lifestyle changes to your diet and exercise levels so the progress you have made towards good health continues.

I work from private practice in a beautiful rural setting offering a quiet and tranquil space that enhances physical, mental and emotional healing. I am passionate about complementary therapy and good health; working as a Reflexologist for 15 years, as a healer for nearly 13 years and in Nutritional Advice for the last 2 years. Prior to this I was a teacher for hearing impaired children. I have worked closely with Cancer patients both at the Cancer Information Centre at the Churchill Hospital and Sobell House in Oxford. I am currently training to be a Nutritional Therapist, to qualify in December 2009.

What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is the manipulation of the feet and hands that has a positive effect on the body. Every organ, gland, tissue and body systems are represented in the feet and hands and by using a specific technique with the fingers and thumb the Reflexologist is able to stimulate specific areas resulting in relaxation and rejuvenation.

With the extensive nerve distribution in the feet, and the large portion of the sensory and motor area of the brain devoted to the feet, stimulation and therapeutic movement of the feet activates responses throughout the nervous system. Which is why the results are across the entire body. Neurologically, the activation of receptors in the feet changes the areas which are out of balance by sending new messages into the system, which responds by becoming relaxed and can start to heal themselves

Specific thumb and finger pressure applied to the feet generates a signal through the peripheral and central nervous system, relayed to the brain and on to the various organs that adjust oxygen, energy and nutrient levels. Finally a response is sent to the motor system and the body’s overall tone and tension level is adjusted, reducing stress on the body’s internal systems.

In addition a Reflexologist works on 10 zones that are spread across the body, 5 on each side of the body. In the US Reflexology is often called “Zone Therapy” and was the basis for development of reflexology in the 1900’s. The zones are seen as a system for organising relationships between various parts of the body, acting rather like markers that pass all the way through and along the body, so any disturbance to the health of a zone will affect the entire zone. This is how the foot is able to mirror the entire body.

Hand Reflexology:

Hand reflexology works on the same principle that reflex points in the hand correspond to specific areas of the body and the internal organs. It is used if the feet if are injured or amputated. Working on the hands can be just as effective as working on the feet stimulating the organs to improve circulation, reduce tension and balance the body's energy.

What can Reflexology do for you?

Reflexology enhances the natural healing process of the body and improves general health. Common ailments that are treatable with reflexology:
  • Allergies and hay fever
  • Arthritis
  • Asthma

  • Diabetes
  • Digestive disorders, including acid reflux
  • Earache

The truth revealed

I recently asked some of my patients if they would be willing to put all the kind things they say to me onto a web page, here are just a few I would like to share with you:

My girlfriend persuaded me to try reflexology a couple of years ago. I have subsequently found that regular sessions with Mari to be beneficial for a wide variety of my complaints from back pain, digestion, and respiratory problems. As a sinus sufferer I maintain that it offers instant relief from congestion. It also helps to improve my stress levels. I believe that this therapy is contributing to my better overall health, as well as being an excellent form of relaxation.
Peter, Oxfordshire

"Mari has helped me reduce the number and severity of my migraines, as well as improve the quality of my life through reflexology, relaxation and meditation. She is easy to talk to and her insight has helped to turn my life around. I would highly recommend her to anyone."
Ann, Carterton

I initially consulted Mari due to a recent medical diagnosis, which had 'knocked the wind out of my sails'. Her understanding of my situation was a great comfort to me and she quickly set about boosting my self-confidence, improving my well-being through comprehensive nutritional advice and exercise plans. I can honestly say that I can't think of anyone better than Mari to enter into partnership with in identifying and then reaching a solution(s) to your condition or problem. She is very perceptive, understanding, possesses the patience of Job and has a most gentle manner. I found her to be inspirational and I came away from her sessions feeling quite exhilarated and more confident in coping with my condition.

I started to see Mari for reflexology for a number of reasons, and have been delighted with the benefits after each session. Mari is extremely professional and friendly and clearly has a vast amount of experience in this area. Not only does reflexology with Mari target specific problems or areas of concern, but also after each session you are likely to feel extremely relaxed which is a benefit in itself!
Gaby, London

'My visits to Mari for an hour of reflexology are like an oasis of calm in an otherwise busy life. I have been amazed how much information Mari can pick up from my feet but this has given her the opportunity to advise me about diet also. The whole session is very relaxing along with gentle background music and I leave feeling refreshed and invigorated. Mari herself is a kind and warm person who is very knowledgeable about her subject.'
Diana, South Oxfordshire

How is reflexology different from foot massage

A foot massage can be relaxing, but Reflexology focuses on specific pressure points that need to be worked by a trained practitioner who has an understanding of body functions.

The history and development of Reflexology

The practice of foot massage has a long history. Even the ancient cultures upheld a tradition of massaging the feet to improve well being. Stimulating the pressure points of the feet was used in China over 5.000 years ago.
However, reflexology didn't become popular in contemporary Western society until the early 20th century due to influential work of Dr. William Fitzgerald who studied this technique at the University of Vienna. He introduced reflexology, which he called zone therapy, at the Boston and Connecticut clinics where he practiced medicine. As an ear, nose, and throat specialist, Dr. Fitzgerald used reflexology as a complementary therapy for anaesthesia and pain relief.

Foot and hand reflexology are well established in the UK today. Eunice Ingham first developed it in the 1930's. After working with several hundred patients she wrote a book entitled "Stories The Feet Can Tell" in which she discussed her cases and drew a map of the reflexes. Reflexology as we know it today was introduced to the UK in 1960 by Doreen Bayly, a former colleague of Eunice Ingham.
