Success, if you want it - Executive coach, Ian MacFadyen explains.
A medium sized organisation faced big challenges turned to coaching.

I worked with a director over several months. I pushed them to set goals. I probed, challenged negativity, stretched ideas and pressed them for ways to achieve the goal, which they then carried out before our next session. The result? The organisation – and its employees - found success.

Coaching could work for you too.

Here’s a taster. At the top of a page write something to improve in your business life and at the bottom write your goal. Write done how you will know and could show others that you’ve achieved your goal. Then mark the page to show how close you are now to achieving the goal.

Pick a goal. Write three big or little things you can do towards the goal. Add another three. Pick one or two or work on and set a time limit. Tell someone you trust to encourage you. Do the things. See the results in the business and in your life and mark the page again to show your advance. Tell your trusted person - and give yourself a pat on the back.

Coaching
Executive coaching.

Ian MacFadyen Consulting’s coaching can help you with big and difficult change. Ian MacFadyen Consulting’s coaching has enabled Civil Servants and private sector directors to make big moves forward.

Through coaching, they – and their organisation – have motored, not coasted; led difficult change and demonstrated results; overcome hurdles to advancing their careers.

What is coaching?
It’s a conversation in which the coach – me, in this case – helps the client – you, dear reader – identify and remove the obstacles to your achieving your full potential.

Client? I don’t like the sound of that.
Me neither. I mean “the person being coached.” Some people say “coachee,” which is worse (and sounds like a piece of furniture. Mind you, “coach” could be confused with a charabanc!)

And, you are?
Me? Ian MacFadyen, scion of the Clyde, once removed; freelance coach and consultant, former Whitehall warrior and NHS authority director.

Enough already! So, it’s therapy, like counselling, for example?
No. Counselling and therapies are very useful if you need them but coaching helps you look forward and use your own resources. We all have strengths and abilities that we don’t use and coaching helps you find and use them.

Ah, you mean mentoring?
No. In mentoring you learn from the experience of the mentor. With coaching you bring out your own skills and your coach needn’t have experience of your work or situation. The point is that all these things can help in particular circumstances and, if you want support, you should use the one that will be most appropriate to you. Coaching can support you in looking forward, in using your skills, and in removing obstacles to your going places.

Needing support – how’s that going to look?
Pretty good, actually. Coaching is being used by captains of industry and school children, and from government to the tenement. It shows you take yourself seriously and others will take you seriously too. Having a coach is becoming a bit of a status symbol.

Really, so who have you coached?
It’s all confidential; but, just between us, a team at the heart of a government, company directors moving on, and middle and senior managers.

It’s all confidential?
Absolutely! When I tell you who I’ve coached, I’ve disguised their identities and asked them first. Of course, if people being coached want to tell others – and recommendations are always appreciated – that’s up to them. I mentioned it’s a bit of a status symbol.

So, how does it work?
You pick a topic and we talk about it. You set a goal. We put some shape on the goal and I’ll ask how you’ll know when you’ve achieved it. We talk about what you’ve done already, who else will be affected and so on. You identify an option and go off to carry it out and then, next time, you say how you got on.

Sounds like it’s all down to me!
Yes, because it’s your life and future, but your coach helps you clear the way forward and, perhaps, summon up the courage to move forward. Your coach is your friend on your side in an uncertain world.

Where’s the proof it makes any difference?
There have been studies (many of them in the United States) that have found measurable step change improvements in productivity, morale and motivation following coaching. Personal testimonies from clients – mine and others’ – state that they have been helped in moving up their career ladders.
