About Us

Bioenergetic Therapy is a form of psychotherapy which as well as using traditional psychotherapeutic techniques uses body work to release deeply held physical and emotional tension, and to help put in place positive feelings and beliefs. The combination of body work and analysis makes it possible to work with problems which may be very difficult or impossible to change either with purely verbal therapies or with physical therapies alone ,valuable as these are in their own right. It is extremely helpful in working with psychological shock states ,which may develop at any age from birth to adulthood ,and include such events from, for example, birth difficulties ,physical and sexual abuse ,sudden bereavements and involvement ion in violence or traffic accidents, the damaging emotional effects of which are often not recognised .It can be also very helpful for depression ,anxiety ,relationship difficulties ,problems with alcohol or drugs.

The effect of the body work ,as well as releasing repressed emotions can also lead to greatly increased vitality and self assurance through the letting go of physical stress held in the body in physical tension, which can be both conscious and unconscious and which may show itself in all kinds of psycho somatic symptoms.

Bioenergetics has its origins in Freudian psycho-analysis,and the radical Freudian Wilhelm Reich, and was developed in America by Reich's student Alexander Lowen who published many books on his work.My own interest has been to try to integrate bioenergetic theory with the British schools of psychoanalysis and early child development studies,on which I have published a paper in the official journal of the I.I.B.A.

I trained with the British Training Group of the International Institute for Bioenergetic Analysis between 1978 and 1985 when I received my accreditation.I have maintained a private practice in Brighton ever since ,and between 2002 and 2004 helped lead a weekend therapy group in Aachen in Germany, with a clinical psychologist friend.I have also worked in residential settings with recovering drug addicts and the long term mentally ill.It is my belief and experience that many people who have been severely ill,who may have been hospitalised and live very restricted lives on medication can be greatly helped with this form of therapy and may be able to greatly reduce or totally come off the drugs..

As with all therapies, the length of treatment will very with the nature and depth of the problem, but most people know within a very short time that it is having a noticeable effect on them, including those who may have already tried other forms of therapy.
