Why Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy means the healing of emotional pain and conflict. Jungian Analytic psychotherapy distinguishes itself from psychotherapy with regard to depth, structure, method and the possibility of meeting more frequently. Both approaches offer a therapeutic process that increases awareness of our inner emotional world and its influence over relationships both past and present. It is a process of exploration between therapist and patient whereby the patient is invited to reflect on what is uppermost in his/her mind during a 50-minute session. Psychotherapy aims to help individuals gradually to identify underlying causes of their discontent and promotes understanding and a capacity for change by making these conscious. Working with dreams is an important aspect of the work in that dreams are understood as giving voice to what is going on at an unconscious level in the person’s psyche and function like a psychological X-ray of the individual’s emotional inner life situation. Although each experience is personal generally this process empowers an individual to live life more fully.

"As far as we can discern, the sole purpose of human existence is to kindle a light in the darkness of mere being."
Carl Gustav Jung, Memories, Dreams, Reflections, 1962

How it works: I like to begin with a telephone conversation as this gives us a chance to hear each other's voices and to get an initial sense of whether we can work together. I will need to get a sense of whether I feel able to be helpful, and you will probably have some questions about what is involved. The next step would be to arrange an initial assessment session, which may last up to one hour and twenty minutes and this is an opportunity to talk about things in more detail. At this meeting I will set out the practical aspects of working together in terms of breaks, fees, billing and cancellation policy etc. After this regular meetings can be set up. These would typically begin once weekly but could build up to three times weekly. Each session lasts 50 minutes. Please either phone (0207 289 1198) or email me (marycunnell@yahoo.co.uk) in the first instance. If I am not available, it is helpful if you can leave a message stating when would be a good time to return your call.
