Lymphoedema

What is Lymphoedema?

Lymphoedema is a swelling which can affect some people. when lymph fluid cannot drain away. Some people develop lymphoedema if they have lymph glands removed during surgery or have had radiotherapy.

This can damage or block the normal drainage pathway. Resulting in swollen, misshapen limbs.

Although this treatment is essential to cure cancer it may also damage the lymphatic system.

Lymphoedema is not curable, but there are ways to control and manage the symptoms that can also help improve a person's quality of life. Treatment is focused on self-management and what you can to reduce your risk of developing this condition.

Treatments and prevention

Treatment is focused on a self-management plan individual to your needs. This is usually based on four main areas;-skin care, compression therapy, massage, exercise.

Skin care - Good skin care is essential to maintain skin integrity and reduce infection. People with lymphoedema are prone to cellulitis. See www.thebls.com/consensus

Compression therapy - (multi-layer bandaging and lymphoedema garments). Helps to increase blood circulation improving venous and lymphatic flow.

Massage - Manual lymph drainage (MLD) or patient self lymphatic drainage massage (sld). This encourages lymph drainage in a compromised lymphatic system. Lymph is rerouted from blocked and swollen regions to healthy and functioning nodes

Exercises - Exercise enhances the efficiency of the muscles hence increasing lymph circulation
  • Optimum exercise for lower limbs is cycling, walking, and Nordic walking. While swimming, or just walking in the swimming pool in water to chest height, is excellent to encourage lymph drainage.

For enhanced effect wear compression hosiery when exercising.

Intensive treatment course

An intensive treatment programme combining manual lymphatic drainage massage and bandaging to reduce the swelling may be considered.following assessment. This Intensive Treatment course is usually given over 2 or more weeks.

Prevention

In the long term this is dependant on:-

  • Adapting your lifestyle
  • Getting into a routine with doing the various self-treatments including daily skin care, wearing of lymphoedema garments, regular exercising and use of self-massage where necessary.
  • Keeping your body weight within normal limits is also important.Making these self-treatments a natural part of your daily life is the key to successful control of your lymphoe¬dema.

  • Nordic Walking

Nordic Walking is extremely useful, as the weight of the legs is supported by the poles used Compared with ordinary walking, Nordic Walking puts less strain on the body.

    kinesio tape

    What is kinesio tape?

The Kinesio Taping Technique and Tape was developed by Dr. Kenzo Kase and is used for swelling and pain caused by lymphoedema.

    How does it work?

The tape is similar in weight to the top layer of the skin. It lifts the skin during movement. This encourages lymph fluid to move towards the lymph nodes encouraging drainage. The tape stimulates lymph circulation as the body moves. Muscle pain may also be reduced as pressure on the pain receptors is relieved.

    Using Kinesio tape

If kinesio tape is assessed as being effective you will be taught how to re-apply the tape at your lymphoedema appointment and a follow up appointment made to ensure that you are applying the tape correctly. If you wish to bring a partner or a friend to the visit please discuss this at your appointment.

    Scar Management

As a result of surgery a scar is formed. During the healing process adhesions can form under the skin where surgery took place. This can and cause tightness, pain and increased sensitivity. In order to help reduce these sensations it is important to look after the scar.

    Touching and Feeling the Scar

Once you are able to look at the scar and it has fully healed you will be taught to move the scar and surrounding tissue. This will help to reduce sensitivity and adhesions that can form post-operatively. This will also reduce tightness and increasing movement within the scar.

    Chi Machine

Provides gentle and rhythmic movements, exercising and freeing up muscular and skeletal tensions.

    Deep Oscillation Therapy (Hivamat 200)

To supplement and intensify manual treatment, stimulating anti-inflammatory effects, wound healing and oedema reduction.

    Lipoedema

    What is Lipoedema?

Lipoedema is a disorder of the distribution of fat within the body. It appears most frequently on the upper thigh and lower leg but also, less frequently, on the arms. Patients can experience high skin sensitivity that is painful to touch and bruises easily. Some may develop lymphoedema as well, called lipo-lymphoedema.

Lipodema can occur at any age but it is most common for it to arise during puberty or pregnancy.
Dieting does not help decrease the size, but a healthy diet does help maintain their weight.

    Treatment
    • Consistent wearing of compression garments, class 2 or 3 is necessary.
    • Even though people with lipodema have a healthy lymphatic system, having regular manual lymphatic drainage is very beneficial in making the legs feel lighter..
    • Getting help from support groups or individuals to come to terms with this condition is also vital for one's emotional well-being.
    • Swimming is extremely beneficial.
    • Diet to reduce excess weight that accompanies the condition

    Mannual Lymphatic drainage (MLD)

    What is Manual Lymph drainage?

MLD is a gentle massage, stretching skin to promote the optimal functioning of the initial lymph vessels, nodes and ducts of the lymphatic system.

When the lymphatic system becomes blocked people may be more susceptible to viral infections. The treatment is extremely relaxing, causing no pain or redness and using no oils.

    How can MLD help?

As well as where lymph nodes have been removed or the lymphatic system is impaired. manual lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is helpful in many chronic conditions including:
    • Sinusitis, catarrh, glandular fever, ME
    • May strengthen the immune system
    • It can improve the appearance of scars old and new, stretch marks, and cellulite, rosacea, acne
    • It promotes the healing of torn ligaments and minor burns
    • It can reduce puffy eyes and swollen ankles, especially during pregnancy or due to pre-menstrual syndrome
    • Pre and post operative cases, cosmetic surgery,
    • It has a calming effect on the autonomic nervous system leaving you deeply relaxed

The first visit will include a consultation and the therapist will outline the number and frequency of sessions.
Each MLD session will last approximately one hour. Where appropriate, the therapist will work in conjunction with your medical practitioner.

    Customer comments

“I feel amazing. I can't remember the last time I felt this good!"

    MLD Client, Cardiff

“The heavyness in my legs has gone. They feel so much lighter”

    MLD client Pontypridd

“MLD is currently the only treatment that will relieve symptoms. I have found it to be very helpful. It relieved all of the symptoms related to the Lipoedema and I began to feel less tired and sluggish. “

    Lipoedema client Cardiff

“Janet performed MLD on my face and neck following surgery for throat cancer. Janet focused on the scar using soft tissue technique and mobilisation of scar tissue technique. I was taught to apply the technique in between sessions. I noticed a difference after the first treatment. The swelling has reduced so much that friends have made positive comments. I am convinced that MLD helped my speedy recovery.”

    Mld client. Pontypridd

“I was diagnosed with breast cancer aged 50 yrs old. Two years later I developed Lymphoedema in my right arm. The after effects of a lumpectomy and axillary node clearance proved to be minimal compared with the physical and psychological effects of the Lymphoedema. The condition has restricted my physical activities; it is painful; unsightly; limits choice of clothing and is difficult to come to terms with. For the past 4 years I have been receiving Manual Lymphatic Drainage treatment from Janet, which has been invaluable. Although there is no cure for my condition, Janet's treatment has enabled me to continue with some physical activity. It has given me confidence that any immediate swelling can be managed and that the condition is not hopelessly untreatable. With regular treatment, we have kept the condition manageable to the extent that it can go unnoticed by other people. I feel comfortable wearing clothes on social occasions that reveal my arms without the use of support hosiery. Psychologically, this is priceless and life changing.”

    Mld client Porthcawl
