Pyelonephritis is a kidney infection which can be acute and sudden or chronic over a long period of time. The spread of bacteria from the bladder can cause it. Chronic pyelonephritis is a consistent inflammation of the kidneys which can cause scarring and lead to chronic renal failure. Back, side and groin pain, frequent and urgent urination, fever or chills and signs of pus or blood in urine are all symptoms of pyelonephritis.
