Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting the spine and joints in the pelvis. It is a type of arthritis and symptoms include stiffness, lack of movement and pain. In serious cases, the development of this disease may cause the fusion of bones (ankylose) and a rigid spine. AS may affect other joints in the body as well as organs including the eyes, heart, lungs and kidneys. Treating this disease may involve different forms of drug therapy as well as physical therapy, heat therapy, relaxation, acupuncture and yoga. In severe cases, surgery may be required.
