Herbal Medicine for Bronchitis

Herbal medicine is an ancient holistic method of curing and healing a wide array of ailments and infections, including chest infections such as bronchitis. Conventional medical treatments utilise medication to reduce congestion and antibiotics to eliminate the infection, but often come with unwelcome side effects.  For antibiotics this also often results in some degree of resistance in bacteria, which reduces their long term efficacy. Some cough medications contain cough suppressants, which stifle the body’s natural method of expelling the phlegm and mucous – which can delay recovery.

What is Bronchitis?

Bronchitis is an infection of the lungs that causes the passages of the bronchi to become inflamed and congested with mucous.  A virus or bacterial infection is often the primary cause of chest infections like bronchitis and pneumonia.  Because this is the area where gaseous exchange takes place, breathing is often restricted and difficult due to inflammation of the bronchial passages and the presence of mucous.

Infants, the elderly and those already sick should be seen by a doctor if they develop bronchitis, as it has the potential to become life threatening.

What is Herbal Medicine?

Herbal medicine, or phototherapy, uses plant and flower extracts to heal, cure and alleviate a range of ailments and conditions.  These are either whole parts of a plant or elements of a plant (root or leaves) that have been infused or extracted in the form of an oil.  There is a long tradition of herbal medicine in many cultures including traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the Indian Ayurvedic tradition and local Aboriginal culture.

How Can Herbal Medicine Help Bronchitis?

Most herbal medicine used to treat bronchitis is aimed at clearing the passages of bronchial or nasal congestion, as well as boosting the immune system. Some herbs or plants that are used in the treatment of chest infections, such as bronchitis, include:

  • Eucalyptus
  • Garlic
  • Echinacea
  • Ginseng
  • Primrose; and
  • Peppermint

Herbal remedies can trigger side effects and can interact with other herbs, supplements, or medications so ensure you consult a qualified and accredited herbalist for your condition. Questions to ask your herbalist or herbal therapist include the details of their professional qualifications, if they are covered by insurance and how many sessions will be involved in your treatment session.
