Depression and Reiki


Reiki is an ancient Eastern healing practice that may prove beneficial in treating symptoms of depression. Please read on for more information.

What is Depression?

Depression, often referred to as clinical depression, is a mental illness that entails an overwhelming sense of sadness, loss and hopelessness. Bouts of the condition may span from weeks to years, and may sometimes cause the sufferer to despair so greatly they no longer want to live. Depression is generally caused by an imbalance of chemicals in the brain, and may be triggered by a specific physical or emotional trauma.

What is Reiki?

Reiki is a traditional Japanese technique based on the Eastern concepts of the seven energy centres (chakras) in the body and energy flow between them. It is a powerful technique that releases the negative energy of the body often responsible for various symptoms of Depression.

A Reiki practitioner uses the touch of their hands to clear these blockages to encourage the body’s natural healing process. Fully clothed, they will sequentially place their hands over parts of the body that correspond to the different energy centres, using actual touch or distant touch (NB: this is not a massage technique). This way they are able to detect energy blockages in the body that may be the cause of any disease or illness. The practitioner will then use their own energy to manipulate the body’s energy flow, relieving the symptoms, and increasing feelings of health and well-being.

How Can Reiki Work to Relieve Symptoms of Depression?

Reiki masters believe that diseases such as depression interfere with the body’s surrounding energy field causing feelings of sadness, loneliness, anxiety and pain.

Using their hands, the practitioner will first identify areas of the body in which energy is blocked or flowing inefficiently. This identification allows them to remove the blockages, thus improving the depressed individuals life force energy, or ‘chi’.

They may also benefit symptoms of depression by removing emotional blockages being held in the body, which are often a product of past negative emotions or traumas.

Reiki also relieves the symptoms of insomnia, stress and fatigue that are often experienced with those suffering from Depression.
