Yoga and Pilates Classes
We offer a wide range of drop in yoga and Pilates classes to suit all levels of experience.
Yoga is an ancient physical, mental and spiritual discipline which originated in India at least 2,500 years ago. Through work with the physical body, breath and mind, the aim of yoga is to increase our overall sense of well-being and to create a mental quietness in which we are able to relate both to ourselves and to the universe around us in a state of greater clarity, perceptiveness and peace. Pilates is an exercise method designed to elongate, strengthen and restore the body to balance and is based on an anatomical understanding of the body's muscular and skeletal systems. Classes will focus on specific areas individually whilst using exercises that integrate the whole body to re-educate and restore it to optimum muscular and skeletal function. Workshops and Courses
The Life Centre offers beginners' yoga courses on Monday evening and Saturday lunchtime at Notting Hill and Tuesday and Wednesday evenings at Islington, giving new students a good grounding in basic yoga principles and practices.
Most Saturday afternoons at Islington, and Sunday afternoons at Notting Hill, we offer a 2 hour workshop, enabling you to explore a yoga or Pilates related topic with one of our teachers in much more depth than in a regular class. Other workshops are scheduled from time to time.
Our sister company, Yogacampus, offers a range of training courses - including yoga teacher training - and longer workshops, many taught by some of the west's very top yoga teachers, who we are privileged to be associated with.
Therapies and Yoga Therapy Clinic
Therapies have been in integral part of the community at The Life Centre since we first opened our doors in Notting Hill. We offer various therapeutic approaches; from over 30 different complimentary therapies at Notting Hill to the new Yoga Therapy Clinic in Islington.
The therapies at Notting Hill are offered from our beautiful therapy rooms. Some of London’s most highly qualified natural health practitioners are available 7 days a week.We recognise that finding the right therapy can take time and our receptionists all have the knowledge to discuss the therapies available to help you find the right one.
Before too long, we will also be welcoming natural health practitioners through the doors at Islington. Our beautiful renovated therapy space in Islington will offer the same quality of treatment available at Notting Hill.
The new Yoga Therapy Clinic at Islington is one of the only yoga therapy clinics in the UK, and offers yoga as therapy – the teachings of yoga applied therapeutically on an individual basis. Our Yoga Therapy Clinic is led by yoga teachers who have additional training in this growing complementary health field. Their experience in the therapeutic applications of yoga for individuals allows them to work with individuals with impaired health or compromised well being. We are delighted to be able to offer yoga therapy at Islington with our low cost Yoga Therapy Clinic - operating every Thursday from the 22nd of September. For those looking for a class environment, we offer a specific yoga therapy class on Wednesday afternoons at 14.30 starting 14th September.
Pregnancy Mums and Babies
The Life Centre recognises that the time from pregnancy through to birth and beyond is a very special time, yet can also be a daunting experience. Your body and life are changing quickly and the number of important choices that you face as a mother to be is seemingly unending. We offer you a wonderful starting point to relax and enjoy your pregnancy. We can help alleviate any stresses or pains, prepare you for the birthing process, and rebuild and rejuvenate following delivery.
We have specially selected classes and teachers to help guide you through. We offer daily pregnancy yoga classes, Baby Massage classes, Mums and Babies classes, ante-natal courses, and occasional workshops.
Both yoga and Pilates are ideal for pregnant and post natal women. They are widely recommended by midwives and doctors to expectant mothers as a way of keeping mobile and healthier and to new mothers to re-adjust after birth, though certain specific practices may be contra-indicated, which is why we strongly recommend that pregnant ladies attend our specialist classes. If you do choose to attend a general class while pregnant, please remember to tell the teacher before the class starts and to abide by their decision whether the class in general, or any specific practices within it, will be inappropriate for you. This may depend both on the stage of your pregnancy and the amount of yoga or Pilates experience which you have. Our specialist classes offer a holistic programme of breath work, relaxation, postures, movement, voice work and meditations suited to all stages of pregnancy from 12-42 weeks and from 6 weeks after birth with no complications.
Consistent practice enhances the vitality, mobility, general health and emotional well-being of the expectant mother; it also provides a valuable quiet space in which to form a bond with the unborn child and to prepare for birth. After the birth, continue this unique relationship with our Mums and Babies and Baby Massage classes. In addition, a great sense of community and friendships are developed with your fellow mums-to-be and new mums!
