Hypnobirthing is one of a number of alternative pain management techniques being utilised to provide relief from the pain associated with labour and birth. This reflects a growing desire among women to experience labour and birth without any drugs or anaesthetic, and to have a natural child birth. The benefits of this approach include eliminating the chance of any side effects resulting from drugs on the health of the baby, as well as a feeling of empowerment and achievement for the mother.
Hypnobirthing utilises the principles of hypnosis to help a mother better manage the pain associated with the birth and labour process. Hypnosis is similar to a state of relaxation that is experienced when your focus your entire thoughts on one subject, to the exclusion of all else. This encourages the release of endorphins – the so-called feel good hormones – which will help to alleviate the pain, while keeping you fully aware of the birthing process.
Hypnobirthing techniques are usually taught in classes, and a partner is usually encouraged to participate so they can accompany the mother into the delivery environment and assist in achieving a relaxed state. This typically involves relaxation techniques and visualizations which encourage a deep state of relaxation, while keeping the mother aware and conscious of the birth of her child. It is a safe technique and suitable for women of all personality types.
