What is Sport and remedial massage?

Basically remedial massage means that we try to fix a muscular or other physical problem through massage, whether that be a slight muscle strain, or a frozen shoulder.

Obviously muscular problems can occur in any individual not necessarily a sports person. However, the needs of an athlete may vary slightly from those of say, an office worker, or an elderly person, so Sports Massage is specialism within remedial Massage. the same techniques are used, but the treatment is tailored to meet the more specific needs of an athlete, whether they are amateur or professional.

Sports massage can be used, to help an athlete in the following ways:

  • Ss a part of their training regime, it can help to avoid injury, and prevent excessive muscle tension building up.
  • Just before an event to help them warm up.
  • During an event, to keep them warm, motivated and to help with any stiffness or minor injuries that have occurred.
  • Post event to aid the muscles in recovery.
  • Injury rehabilitation, massage can help release tight muscles and stimulate those that have become weak through ill use.

Why should I have a sports or remedial massage?

We constantly put our bodies under a great deal of strain, and the result is that our muscles tend to suffer a good deal of where and tear. but injuries that appear to be minor are often neglected and so something that started off as a small niggle, can easily become a chronic problem.

Massage is an excellent way of helping to prevent these injuries occurring, and can also help with there recovery.

Due to its immensely versatile manner almost anyone can benefit in some way from having massage therapy regularly.

What techniques are used?

In sport and remedial massage traditional deep tissue massage techniques are used by the therapist, to improve circulation to muscles, to break down scar tissue and to stretch the muscles.

Other more advanced techniques may also be used including:

  • Soft tissue release, which stretches tight areas of a muscle, (can be very beneficial for people who are already flexible.
  • Muscle energy technique: this is another form of stretching a muscle, and is a pain free way of improving its function.
  • Positional release: this is an excellent technique for reducing muscle spasms, and the effect can often be immediate.
  • Neuromuscular technique: this technique involves applying pressure to trigger points, which helps to ease painful areas within muscles.
