Acupuncture - Chinese Medicine

About Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a safe and powerful treatment that helps to improve health and restore natural balance on the physical and mental level.

Acupuncture is a therapeutic technique used in Chinese Medicine. It works by stimulating acupuncture points in order to re-establish the correct flow of Qi (chi: vital energy) throughout the body. According to the Chinese “anatomy”, there is a highly complicated network of channels in the human body, where Qi flows in order to vitalise every single part of it. A lack or an obstruction of Qi can cause imbalance and consequently, illness.

Acupuncture treatment triggers the body’s immune system to take over and battle the disease. In cases of incurable diseases or immunocompromised individuals, acupuncture can help alleviate the symptoms. It can also be used for cosmetic purposes, such as facial rejuvenation, weight loss and in some cases, addictions.

Acupuncture is safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding and is particularly useful for childbirth (preparation for labour, turn breech babies, natural labour induction, etc). It is also very successful in helping couples conceive naturally in cases of infertility, whether male or female.

Acupuncture is a complementary therapy, meaning that it works alongside conventional medicine and supplements rather than replaces medical care by your doctor. It is a holistic treatment; therefore it addresses the patient as a whole rather than treating isolated symptoms.

About Shiatsu

Shiatsu is a therapeutic technique that was developed in Japan and is based on the principles of Chinese Medicine and acupuncture.

The word Shiatsu means “finger pressure”, as the practitioner’s hands are the main tools used. Pressure is applied along specific channel routes throughout the body (known as meridians in Chinese Medicine) and on individual acupuncture points, in order to restore the smooth flow of Qi (Chi) in the body. When the flow of Qi is impaired, there is imbalance that can be manifested as pain or other symptoms. Re-establishing this balance is the milestone of the therapeutic process.

Shiatsu can be used alongside other therapies without compromising their effects. It is a complementary therapy that should not replace conventional medical care.

Shiatsu is conducted with the receiver dressed in comfortable clothes, lying on a futon, treatment couch or a chair. The techniques used are pressure, stretchings or rotations. The pressure used depends on the needs of the individual, so that it is comfortable and relaxing.

Shiatsu is a holistic therapy, as it treats the whole person rather than the disease. A diagnosis is made at the beginning of each session, which is based on questions asked by the practitioner and on palpation of the abdominal area (“Hara” diagnosis). The duration of the treatment is approximately one hour, although this can vary with each individual case.

Shiatsu is safe and beneficial from infancy to old age. It is deeply relaxing and helps to prevent the built up of stress in our daily lives. It improves physical and psychological wellbeing and boosts the immune system. Therefore, many health conditions respond positively to Shiatsu, such as muscle stiffness, joint pain and reduced mobility, back and shoulder pain, headaches, menstrual disturbances, digestive complaints, breathing difficulties, insomnia, anxiety, stress, depression, fatigue. In chronic and complex cases, Shiatsu can help manage the symptoms and improve general wellbeing.
