Chiropodists and Podiatrists

Howlett & Dickinson is a podiatry practice based in Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne and our practice is the first in the North East to be accredited by the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists. This means we have reviewed our standards to ensure they comply with the national standards and best practices within the profession.

What's the difference between a Chiropodist & a Podiatrist?
  • Podiatry is the generally accepted new title for Chiropody.
  • It is currently the highest standard of foot healthcare in the UK.
  • A Podiatrist is a professional person devoted to the study and medical treatment of disorders of the foot, ankle and lower extremity.

SERVICES

Podiatry
Routine Chiropody
Some people need to visit a podiatrist to have callouses and corns removed and simple nail cutting. This is routine treatment and is a painless procedure, involving the removal of the callous or corn with a scalpel and putting any dressings on where necessary to alleviate the pressure. Callouses and corns are caused by friction or pressure or both.

Advice is also given re: nail cutting and footwear.

During your routine treatment your feet will be examined thoroughly and any underlying conditions or problems will be diagnosed. Any further treatment for any problems found will be discussed and a treatment plan will be made.

Sports Injury
Howlett & Dickinson deal with many sports injuries including:-
  • plantar fasciitis
  • spurs
  • knee pain
  • shin splints
  • ankle injuries
  • joint pain in the feet
  • iliotibial band syndrome
  • leg length discrepancy
  • Achilles tendon injuries
  • muscle cramps and
  • chronic leg pain

Howlett & Dickinson offers Biomechanics and Gait Analysis as part of our sports injury treatments.

Nail Surgery
Nail Surgery involves the removal of the whole nail or one or both sides according to the condition.

Nails become damaged due to trauma (i.e. shoe pressure or dropping something on them).

You can also inherit bevelled nails when conservative treatment of a nail condition hasn’t been successful. Nail surgery is an option and may be necessary due to ingrowing nails, involuted nails or very thick nails.

In our experience it is generally bad nail cutting which is the most likely cause for nail surgery. Nail surgery is a straightforward procedure including the use of a local anaesthetic. It takes 30-40 minutes on average. The area generally has to be kept dry for about 3 weeks.

Podiatric Acupuncture
What is Podiatric acupuncture?
Podiatric acupuncture is the treatment of the lower limb from the knee down only.
Acupuncture is the practice of inserting needles into the body to reduce pain or induce anaesthesia.

In podiatry this can help in many ways. The obvious ones being pain relief for:-
  • arthritic joints
  • plantar fasciitis
  • heel spurs
  • Morton’s neuroma
  • bunions
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • stress fractures

Acupuncture can also help with:
  • restless legs
  • headaches
  • muscle pain
  • gout
  • Raynaud’s disease
  • Varicose ulcers
