Welcome to Harmonic Osteopathy

Harmonic osteopathy is based in the west end of Edinburgh and is a specialist treatment for muscle and joint pain. Osteopathy is often thought of as a treatment for back pain only but it is most effective for pain and stiffness in all muscles and joints. Osteopaths use a variety of techniques to achieve their objective and harmonic osteopathy specialises in the harmonic technique. This technique uses rhythmic oscillatory movements to gently rock various body parts. It can achieve the objectives faster and more effectively and reduces the need for any heavy joint cracking and painful massage and stretching.

If you have a pain or stiffness that is severe enough for long enough that it needs sorted; if the NHS has been ineffective; if you have a pain without an obvious cause whether in the back, neck, shoulders or hips; if you have a persistent or recurring injury then it is probably being caused by something you are doing - a particular behaviour you are unaware of. Prolonged static postures or repetitive movements create specific movement patterns or restrictions. If you change the behaviour you can often fix the problem. It is as simple as that.

So don't despair, there is help available, which is neither expensive nor time consuming.

All osteoapths study for four or five years for an undergraduate degree, which is similar to a medical degree, with more emphasis on anatomy and musculoskeletal medicine. This means that they are trained to diagnose your problem and then decide which is the best treatment to fix it. By law, osteopaths must register with the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC). It is an offence for anyone to call themselves an osteopath if they are not registered. The British Medical Association's guidance for general practitioners states that doctors can safely refer patients to osteopaths.

About Me

My name is Robbie Smith and I am a qualified osteopath, medical acupuncturist and ergonomic consultant. I initially trained as a zoologist and have an interest in human and animal evolution and biomechanics. I have a special interest in how the body is designed to move, the impact that modern sedentary lifestyles and postures has on this and the resulting problems.

Since qualifying as an osteopath in 2003 I have been studying the most effective treatment techniques from western and eastern manual medical disciplines in order to best achieve my objective as an osteopath - to correct poor body function, remove pain and stiffness and restore health.

Like all osteopaths I am fully trained, insured and accepted by most health insurance providers.
