Tour de Force 2010

'What is Ditchling Beacon like compared to Col du Tourmalet?'

I have heard that question a few times this time round from nervous, unexpecting, inexperienced riders! My stock reply is Ditchling Beacon is a 'Hill' - Col du Tourmalet is a 'Mountain!' Some of you may well have, or are going to ride over Ditchling in the London to Brighton bike ride. When the Tour de France came to England 1994 Pantani, the then master of mountains, rode up it with no hands to indicate to the rest that it was not a hill of any consequence! Some indication of what we are about to take on. Another example to try to get a handle of the task is to ride daily from London to Bristol! On the odd occasion we have the small matter of climbing 3/4 of the way up Mount Everest!

3500km later and we will be on a boat praising ourselves and reminiscing over some of the great stories we would have shared with each other.

I'll be trying hard to keep a blog through this website to keep you up to speed on events and happening.

Today Thursday 17th is 'Load the Van Day!' I've spent the last few days accumulating equipment and clothing to try to make life easier whilst we move hotel to hotel, hand washing and nurturing our weary limbs back to life for the next day's riding.

Tomorrow I meet Rick Wates at Redhill train station at commuting time 0600 hrs! On to Kings Cross and then towards our start point in Rotterdam!

On occasions I my run a piece of software so you can track me on Google Earth keep an eye out for it.

Testimonials

I have just completed the 2009 L'Etape du Tour up Mont Ventoux. While I only had two sessions with Steve, they were an important part of my success. I had never cycled up a mountain before I did Ventoux, but Steve's analysis of my fintess, advice on preparation, tips on cycling up and down! long hills gave me the confidence to put in the hours and comlpete it. I even had a few of his tips written down on the underside of my personal route guide, and read them as I approached the final climb.
