I specialise in helping people who are haunted in the present by intrusive memories and flashbacks from past traumatic experiences, which seem to come upon them 'out of the blue'.

People can feel they have no control over these memories, their thoughts, and the distress they experience.

I help people gain relief from this distress using a method known as EMDR which can take away the emotional sting of the memory allowing it to become emotionally neutral like other experiences that just happened once.

What kind of therapy is it?

Counselling or Psychotherapy

Simply put, these are ways to understand how and why we do and think the way that we do. The objective is to use this understanding to improve our lives by making changes that seek to achieve our goals and dreams.

Some therapist call themselves counsellors and some psychotherapists. They both aim to do the same thing. The distinction that really matters is whether they safely and effectively relieve emotional disturbance.

I treat clients as people in need of help, understanding, and wanting to change rather than as people stuck in a set of traditional theories, diagnoses and prognoses. This is an optimistic approach with beliefs that people can and do change, even those with long standing problems, and that people can have choice over what they do and feel.

We work together as client and therapist to create an atmosphere of competence, hope, acceptance, respect, and trust that empowers and instils a sense of control and choice.

We focus on abilities rather than disabilities, strengths rather than weaknesses, opportunities rather than limitations.

All of us are influenced by:
  • The past but do not have to be defined by it.

  • Our sense of what is possible for our future.

  • Our thoughts, feelings, and beliefs but do not necessarily determine our actions and lives.

We therefore avoid going over and over past distressing events and dwelling on the past. What we do instead is to acknowledge these events and seek out positive past experiences we can use now and in the future. These resources are used together with new strategies of thinking and doing and a real sense of what is possible to make the difference now and tomorrow.

It is then a short step to find it's possible to change, to have choice over what we think about and do, and start to have control over the things in our lives we can influence - ourselves and how we feel.

About Me

Who I Am and What I Do

I have worked as a counsellor and psychotherapist within the NHS in a large doctors' surgery and now exclusively in private practice. Over the years I have worked with hundreds of clients and have thousands of hours of clinical experience.

My psychotherapy training and approach is as a NeuroLinguistic psychotherapist. I have a diploma in Ericksonian hypno/psychotherapy and I have also trained and experienced in the clinical application and use of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing) for the treatment of traumas and flashbacks often diagnosed in PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and other trauma related complaints.

The psychotherapeutic approaches I use are:
  • NLPt (NeuroLinguistic Psychotherapy)

  • Ericksonian hypno/psychotherapy

  • EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing)

  • CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy)

  • REBT (Rational Emotive Behavioural Therapy)

And the Life Skills I teach are:
  • NVC (Non Violent Communication)

  • Cardiac Coherance

  • Health, exercise & relaxation

I continue to integrate new learning into my work and do what I know to work.

I am an accredited member of the NLPtCA that sets practitioner ethical guidelines and complaints procedures, with which I comply, and a registered psychotherapist with the UKCP and an accredited therapist member of the EMDR UK and Ireland Association.

Specialities

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

I specialize in helping people who are haunted in the present by intrusive memories and flashbacks from past traumatic experiences, which seem to come upon them 'out of the blue'.

People can feel they have no control over these memories, their thoughts, and the distress they experience.

I help people gain relief from this distress using a method known as EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) which can take away the emotional sting of the memory allowing it to become emotionally neutral like other experiences that just happened once.

EMDR was discovered in the 1980’s by Dr Francine Shapiro a psychologist and Senior Research Fellow at the Mental Health Institute in Palo Alto, USA. Since then the technique has been developed and refined to the point where today it is used by trained therapists around the world who have treated many hundreds of thousands of people who experience psychological distress arising from traumatic experiences. EMDR has been successful in treating a variety of traumatic experiences from severe to mild and ranging from:

Sexual abuse and attacks
Violence and physical abuse
Childhood neglect
Road traffic accidents
Near death experiences

performance and social anxiety
panic
confidence and self esteem
trauma related anxiety issues

The EMDR process integrates well with the other psychological approaches I use to provide a seamless and complete treatment for trauma. EMDR uses side to side eye movements or other kinds of bilateral stimulation such as alternate taps on the back of hands to stimulate the brain’s natural information processing system.

Usually, people are able to process traumatic experiences in a natural way. Sometimes experiences can be so overwhelming that people may feel frozen like a rabbit in the headlights. When this happens the brain’s processing system becomes overloaded and does not process the memory. This unprocessed memory is capable of causing severe distress now even though the original experience may have happened a long time ago. These memories become stuck in all their sensory intensity and can be relived vividly when triggered by a current event similar to the original experience.

EMDR works in a natural way tapping in to the mind and body’s out of awareness ability to heal itself. This is a drug free therapy and way of healing that works. The number of sessions needed varies according to how complex the issues may be. Generally fewer sessions are needed to treat a single traumatic experience, like a road traffic accident, where there is just one memory.

EMDR is recommended by NICE (the National Institute for Clinical Excellence in the UK)
