Welcome to Bikram's Yoga College of India Brighton

'Not yoga again,' you might say. It's too slow, I'm not flexible enough, and I'm too old, only girls do that. Are these some of the excuses you have been making to avoid going to a class? No matter what your age, exercise level or ability, Bikram Yoga is a beginner's class. So let me tell you about Bikram Yoga.

BIKRAM YOGA IS PRACTISED IN A HOT ROOM in temperatures of around 42-45 degrees centigrade. So straight away your body is warm and ready for action. As you work through the 26 postures or (asanas) and two breathing exercises, your body's internal and external temperatures start to even out. Your body is now becoming more fluid and open. This allows your muscles to stretch more readily and your joints to move more easily. So no matter what condition your body is in, you can gain a lot of benefit from just one class.

As you get hot you will sweat, a great way to start removing toxins such as nicotine, caffeine and even excess alcohol—not to mention dangerous metabolic waste that can build up, causing all sorts of physical and mental issues.

In fact practising Bikram Yoga gives your joints back their natural range of motion, especially if you have had restricted movement anywhere. As well as bending, stretching and twisting your spine, you are in fact exercising the external and internal body and all its systems—skeletal, muscular, nervous, lymphatic, circulatory, respiratory, urinary, digestive, reproductive and your endocrine system.

Therefore Bikram Yoga benefits you medically, biochemically, physiologically and psychologically—in fact your entire body—and all in just 90 minutes. Wow!

How does it work?
  • Supplies fresh oxygen and nutrients to all parts of the body that may have been stagnant
  • Flushes the lymphatic system
  • Boosts the organs of the immune system
  • Balances the endocrine glands
  • Expands the lung capacity and strengthens the heart
  • Lubricated joints and strengthens bones
  • Stretches, tones and balances muscles all over the body to support the joints and spine
  • Helps to eliminate toxins
  • Improves stamina through deep breathing and strength building
  • Improves circulation throughout the body
  • Stills thought waves in the mind
  • Brings connection between mind and body

Acknowledge your boundaries, but expect them to change.

As we age, our muscles tend to get stiffer, creating more pressure on our joints. By regular stretching we prevent this gradual deterioration. That is why yoga has a rejuvenating effect. Through regular Bikram Yoga practice we liberate vast amounts of energy, which we can use in our daily lives to feel more alive and fulfilled. We thus look and feel younger.

This routine is dynamic and exhilarating. The room is hot to allow a deeper stretch without risk of injury. The series works equally well for the beginner or advanced student. Bikram says, "Never too late, never too old, never too bad or too sick to do this yoga and start from scratch again."

Some days you won't feel like coming at all. These are the days that yoga will benefit you the most.
