Craniosacral Therapy or CST

What is Craniosacral Therapy?

Craniosacral Therapy, or CST, is a branch of Osteopathy that has been developed over the past century. Pioneered by American Osteopath Dr. William Garner Sutherland, who discovered the ‘pulse’ of the craniosacral system, Craniosacral Therapy involves gentle hands-on manipulation of the body that works directly upon the fluid system surrounding the brain and spine.

Just like your cardiovascular system, the craniosacral system has a rhythm felt throughout your body. This system surrounds the brain and spine, enclosing your central nervous system and flushing it with fluid to nourish the nervous system and rid the brain of waste. All the nerves that extend throughout your body pass through the craniosacral system to connect with your brain.

Our body has the amazing ability to heal itself but sometimes life carries on regardless, and the energy and relaxation our bodies demand to help the healing process are spent elsewhere. Craniosacral Therapy supports and enhances the body’s ability to heal itself by identifying and releasing restrictions on movement within the body that promote a deep sense of relaxation and aid vitality.

By applying gentle touch to key areas of the body, I have been trained to identify the source of the obstruction and assist with the restoration of the natural movement of fluid and surrounding soft tissue to help your body ‘remember’ the correct position and promote self-healing. The stress and tension held in the body’s tissues caused by physical and psychological trauma often don’t respond well to more forceful therapies because of the natural tightening reaction of the body tissue to forceful manipulation, which can inhibit or delay full healing. The gentle, corrective approach of Craniosacral Therapy works with your body to promote your own amazing self-healing ability. It’s a versatile, non-invasive therapy that’s suitable for everyone, from newborns, children and teenagers to adults, expectant mothers and the elderly and can be effective for a wide variety of ailments.

Reflexology

What is Reflexology?

Based on an ancient form of Chinese medicine, Reflexology is a type of massage that concentrates on specific areas of the feet, hands and ears that correspond with organs and zones of the body. These zones were first described by ear, nose and throat specialist Dr William Fitzgerald, who discovered that applying pressure to certain areas had an anesthetic effect on other areas of the body. This ‘zone therapy’ was further developed and refined by nurse and physiotherapist Eunice Ingham, who mapped the
entire body into ‘reflexes’ on the feet, hence the name ‘Reflexology’. Each part of the body or organ is linked through the nervous system to a specific area known as ‘reflexes’ on the feet or hands through the nerve endings. Specific manipulation of these reflexes produce a reflex action through the nerves that affect the corresponding body area or organ by unblocking energy paths and improving blood flow.

Reflexology is a non-invasive, holistic complementary therapy that is suitable for everyone from newborn to those receiving end of life care, and everyone in between. It seeks to treat the whole person, helping you to restore your natural balance by taking into account factors that affect both your mind and body. It aims to improve your well-being by reducing stress and tension, promoting relaxation and allowing the body to balance itself, encouraging the self-healing process.

All the systems in our body need to work together in harmonious balance for us to be in good health. Modern life can be stressful and when we are subject to prolonged periods of stress, our body’s defences weaken and we become more susceptible to disease and illness. Approximately 75% of health problems can be linked to stress: insomnia, migraines, difficulty conceiving, digestive problems and fatigue, which negatively impact our physical, mental and emotional well-being. Reflexology can help to inhibit the stress process, promoting deep tranquility of body and mind, improving sleep, stimulating circulation and nerve supply, cleansing the body of toxins and boosting immunity to restore harmonious balance and vitality.

Reflexology can also be used as a preventative health care method, helping you to become focused, energized and more able to cope with the constant demands and pressures of modern life. I can even offer Reflexology sessions in the workplace. It is also an ideal therapy to complement conventional medicine, particularly in cases of infertility, cancer and end of life care.

Reiki

What is Reiki?

Reiki (pronounced ray key) is a holistic Japanese complementary therapy literally meaning “life force” or “universal energy”. It’s a method of natural healing that treats the whole person by channelling the positive force of the universe through the therapist and into your body. The history of Reiki is lost in time but many ancient cultures have passed on this form of healing through generations, using names like “chi”, “chakra”, “prana” and “nadis” for this positive healing energy. Reiki works on both the body and mind, promoting spiritual equilibrium and encouraging your body’s self-healing process.

Reiki is not a religion or a belief system. Anyone is welcomed to train as a Reiki practitioner and anyone, regardless of belief, can benefit from this positive, relaxing and regenerative therapy. Reiki works both physically, mentally and spiritually, loosening blocked energy to relieve pain and encourage well-being by reducing stress, balancing emotions and supporting the body’s natural healing abilities.

Researchers at Stanford University conducted a study into Reiki and, using sensitive equipment, measured the energy flow through the therapist, entering through the crown chakra (head) and exiting through the palm chakras of the hands. In addition, Kirlian photography has captured the increase in emanation of this positive energy force from the hands during treatment.

Reiki energy is a positive energy force that encourages deep relaxation, soothes emotional turmoil and banishes negative feelings. It can bring clarity, and awareness, unlocking your true potential and energising your creative forces to bring a sense of purpose and focus back to your life. It also enhances the benefits of other therapies, both medical and complementary.

Hopi Ear Candling

What is Hopi Ear Candling?

A Hopi Ear Candle therapy (or Thermal Auricular Therapy) is a gentle, non-invasive massage for your ears. Used by the Ancient Greeks and popularised by the native American Hopi Indians of North Arizona, this cleansing, purifying and healing practise helps to loosen excess ear wax, remove impurities and gently rebalance the pressure in the ears, sinuses and upper respiratory tract.

Hopi Ear Candles are cotton tubes that have been soaked in a blend of beeswax, honey and various herbs. When the candle is lit in the ear, it acts like a chimney.

The warm air inside rises, creating a mild vacuum at the base, which helps to loosen compacted earwax and debris and gently stimulates the eardrum through pressure waves. This gentle massaging of the middle and inner ear through the gentle vibration of the eardrum helps to regulate and balance the pressure in the whole of the upper respiratory tract, including the sinuses and Eustachian tubes. The gentle radiant heat of the candle coupled with a light facial massage also helps to stimulate the lymphatic and immune systems whilst increasing peripheral blood circulation, encouraging the release of toxins from the body. It is a deeply cleansing, rebalancing and relaxing experience.
