Alexander Technique with Penny O'Connor
Before training as an Alexander teacher, I worked for ten years as a performer/writer/director and taught drama and special needs in secondary schools. After my training I assisted the training of other teachers at the Centre for Training in North London and set up a consultancy Awareness and Development to take the Technique into the workplace, organizing workshops and conferences, focusing on practical research on RSI.
I then returned to my first love of theatre, working with musical theatre students at the Arts Educational School London in Chiswick. I now work with the BA and MA students in the School of Acting, plus the 6th form and foundation students, running a mentoring scheme for newly qualified Alexander teachers as they assist me in the classes. I have also worked for Graeae Theatre Company, teaching courses in voice and Alexander for disabled students.
I have taught and lectured internationally – Istanbul, New York, Haifa, Athens and Thessaloniki. I have facilitated and organized drama conferences for STAT , given workshops for STAT and at the International Congress of Alexander Technique in Oxford . I am guest teacher at Alexander trainings in London, and run workshops for all – from beginners to teachers - on the Greek Island of Alonnisos during the summer. I teach privately in City of London, Chiswick, and in Alonnisos. I am interested in singing overtones, NLP, Reiki, Tai Chi, and walking my dog…
Alexander Technique for the thinking person
The Alexander Technique is a subtle elegant tool for change with individual private attention.
It doesn’t require you to take off your clothes, put up with pain, or take hours to sweat and pant in the gym.
All it takes is a subtle shift in your thinking and consciousness to achieve mastery of yourself and command of your habits. With the result that you move elegantly and gracefully through life with all the time in the world.
Alexander Technique… no sweat! It is known to
relieve and prevent back pain, neck and shoulder tensions, breathing disorders, RSI, and stress
help with poor posture, lack of confidence
restore our natural health vitality and repose; balance and co-ordination skills
develop excellence in presentation skills, voice, the performing arts, and sports
increase confidence and curiosity
raise our levels of consciousness and awareness
Student Experiences
My jaw and I
“I realised at that moment in my Alexander lesson that a key factor in the way I organise myself to be neat and contained, and to hold myself separate from other people, is by holding my jaw and cheeks rigid. In the lesson when I relaxed my jaw, not only could I relax the whole of my body much more effectively, and have a more succesful Alexander lesson as a consequence, I also related in an entirely different way to my teacher. We talked in a much more relaxed way. I realised that often when I am talking to her and to other people in my life I am partly holding my breath and waiting for the conversation to be over so I can go on to the next thing I need to do, without being held up longer than is necessary….in the time since my Alexander session I have remembered to relax my jaw on a number of occasions and the results have been profound.”

Alexander Technique and my game of golf……
I approach the Tee. I focus on the ball just so I notice where it is. then I expand my awareness and take it round my body and subtely reshape my stance to an Alexander balance and then i take my awareness outside if me to all the sounds and sensations behind me above me, below me and in every direction, and I wait for my body to decided when it wants to hit the ball, while i enjoy the moment and just be with my environment. Guess what? I now hit the ball straight 4 times out of 5 (before it was 2 out of 5) and in an effortless and relaxed way. And I have really started to enjoy my round of golf in this beautiful course as a walk in nature too.

Alexander Technique for a Bad Back
“I’ve had a bad back for something like 20 years and have tried almost every conventional and alternative technique that you can imagine. Most, if not all, have helped remedially, but none seemed to improve things over the longer term. I eventually tried AT after having been recommended the approach by a retired doctor who now teaches AT.
It’s difficult to explain what a difference that AT has made for me. All I can say is that I was recommended AT nearly 20 years ago, and words can’t explain how much discomfort would have been avoided if I had taken that advice then. Please don’t make the mistake I made and take the advice from a former fellow sufferer who recommends that you at least try it and the sooner the better.”
