SERVICES

Welcome to The Institute of Chinese Medicine

We are a centre of excellence in the treatment, research, education and dispensing of Traditional Chinese Medicine and therapies.

Established in 1990, the Institute is one of the foremost centres of research into the many ways in which Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) can work both in conjunction with, and as an alternative to, conventional Western medicine.

The Institute works together with the major London teaching hospitals, undertaking joint research programs, as well as offering courses for GPs (as an introduction to TCM), for qualified Chinese medicine practitioners (to increase and improve their skills) and, finally, for patients (emphasizing the importance of preventive medicine).

To achieve these objectives, the Institute employs a team of the most accomplished specialists in the various fields, including highly skilled practitioners from mainland China.

Based in the centre of London, the Institute offers a range of clinical services, from acupuncture, through to the management of conditions from skin disorders and weight problems, to male sexual dysfunction, as well as dispensing services for herbal treatments.

Also available are free seminars on a range of medical disorders, an unrivalled library of books on open access to researchers and the general public, courses and newsletters.

Aims of the Institute of Chinese Medicine

The Institute of Chinese Medicine was conceived as a meeting point for Traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine. The Institute aims to:
  • Bring the finest traditions of Traditional Chinese medicine to the forefront of credible complementary medicine

  • Meld the knowledge of millennia with recent Western techniques and practices to complement Western medicine

  • Provide a centre of excellence in the practice of Traditional Chinese medicine

  • Undertake research projects combining accepted Western scientific procedure with the unique characteristics of Chinese medicine philosophy

  • Contribute to the development of new drugs and remedies

  • Promote, educate and inform the benefits to the medical community and the wider general public

  • Offer free information resources

  • Provide clinical services from highly qualified practitioners

  • Offer the finest quality herbs and preparations

History of the Institute of Chinese Medicine

The Institute of Chinese Medicine was founded in 1990 with its status as an institute being endorsed by Companies House.

Its three principal aims have always been, and remain:
  • the promotion of medical research

  • the treatment of patients

  • the education of the medical community, both Western and Chinese in Traditional Chinese medicine

Over the course of 14 years, the Institute has funded and supervised a number of PhD students in collaboration with, among others, King's College, London, and treated over 10,000 patients.

The Institute has been fully involved in the development of regulations to ensure the safety of Traditional Chinese medicine, working with governmental bodies such as CITES (The International Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) to prevent the use of products derived from some 30,000 endangered species, of which some 25,000 are plants.

Some of the more recent research programmes undertaken by the Institute have resulted in the patenting of new treatments in conjunction with some of the leading Western pharmaceutical companies.

We further aim to pursue these goals by widespread public education including dissemination of information via the media.
