Osteopathy is a curative treatment that aims to correct supposed deformation of the skeleton, seen as the cause of many "dis-eases".
Andrew Taylor -Still, the founder of Osteopathy, put it more simply when he said "structure governs function". It is believed that given the right circumstances the body has the power to heal itself. The Osteopath seeks to assist the body in doing just that.
Osteopaths work with their hands both to diagnose conditions and to treat them.
Osteopaths use palpation, feeling the tissues under their fingers, and by comparing the temperature, tone and response to movement to what they know to be normal, decide how to treat the patient.
Diagnosis involves taking a full case history, undertaking a thorough physical examination and if necessary some medical investigation such as blood tests, X-rays etc.
