Welcome to The Shiatsu College Brighton

Our Aims and Ethos

The Shiatsu College was founded in 1986 by a group of experienced and innovative Shiatsu teachers. Their shared aim was to develop a full length Shiatsu training, of comparable status to the Acupuncture courses available at that time. Since then the College has expanded and flourished, branches have spread around the UK and the courses and teaching have continued to develop. The College has a national reputation for professional excellence and we maintain our aim of providing the highest possible quality of Shiatsu training.

In choosing the Shiatsu College
  • You can be confident of receiving the very best teaching. You will be accompanied on your learning journey by teachers able guide and support you expertly and sensitively.

  • You will receive teaching which combines the most up-to-date advances in Shiatsu with traditional wisdom.

  • You are assured of the solidity and benefits which come from our long and successful experience in training people from all walks of life, including: nurses, gardeners, photographers, care workers, office workers, physiotherapists, driving instructors, doctors, electricians, engineers, and mums and dads.

  • You will be learning at a school which holds the highest level of endorsement awarded by the Shiatsu Society; its curriculum and its student assessment processes all being approved by the Society.

  • You will be highly respected for your level of training and your skills, and you will have strong foundations on which to build a successful career as a Shiatsu Practitioner, if this is your aim.
If you intend to make Shiatsu your career, then you will also want to know that, as one of our Graduates, you will enjoy full exemption from the Shiatsu Society's examinations and assessments; and that, after gaining 12 months of structured professional practice experience, you will entitled to join the Society’s Register of Professional Practitioners (allowing you to use the letters ‘MRSS’ after your name.)
What is Shiatsu?

detail of shiatsu treatmentShiatsu is an highly effective and enjoyable complementary therapy, often sought for specific medical conditions or as preventative healthcare and to enhance quality of life.

Shiatsu comes from Japan (the words shi and atsu mean finger and pressure in Japanese) but its theory is rooted in traditional Chinese medicine, following the philosophy of Yin, Yang and Qi (Ki in Japanese). The philosophy of East Asian medicine is logical and consistent, and in no way contradicts modern developments in Western science.

Shiatsu treatment is performed on a futon on the floor, using your elbows, knees, palms and thumbs to apply pressure from this position.
