Welcome to Dr Gina Johnson - Medical Acupuncturist
What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a traditional complementary therapy which has been practised for over five thousand years. It uses extremely fine, flexible needles pushed into the skin, which can relieve symptoms of some physical and psychological conditions and may encourage the patient's body to heal and repair itself, if it is able to do so.
At the moment, anybody in the UK is allowed to call themselves an acupuncturist, regardless of qualifications or experience. Patients are advised to check the credentials of their practitioner.
What problems can medical acupuncture help with?- Pain relief for a wide range of conditions. It is commonly used to treat musculoskeletal pain, for example back, shoulder, neck, elbow and knee pain
- It has been used successfully to treat headaches, migraines, trapped nerves, chronic muscle strains, sports injuries, arthritis and rheumatic pain
- Irritable bowel syndrome
- Period pains and hot flushes
- Anxiety and stress
About Dr Gina Johnson
I was born in Luton, and have worked as a general practitioner in the town since 1983.
I have been actively involved in research since 1986. I trained as an acupuncturist with the British Medical Acupuncture Society in 2004, and was awarded their Certificate of Competence in 2005. In 2006 I travelled with an experienced medical acupuncturist, Dr Sally Watkins, to Ethiopia where we treated patients and taught the local nursing nuns how to use acupuncture. We made a video of the trip, which you can view on my website http://www.tryacupuncture.co.uk.
