About Shiatsu

We enjoy good health when our energy is flowing freely.

Shiatsu is a holistic therapy developed from Eastern massage and pressure point techniques that have been used for over a 1000 years. Touch is given to assist your body in finding ways to balance itself.

Shiatsu and acupuncture use the same energy channels (meridians) and points. However, instead of using needles, during Shiatsu, I use my fingers, hands or arms to apply sensitive touch.

When energy in the channels becomes depleted, or blocked, you may experience stress, discomfort or illness or feel a lack of emotional or mental wellbeing.

The touch of Shiatsu helps your body to make space in the energy channels so that the messages it needs to send to and from its cells, organs and systems can flow. Free flowing energy is less stressed and more relaxed. This gives your body the opportunity to function more effectively and heal itself, which in turn can enhance your sense of wellbeing.

About the Session

What to Expect

Throughout your treatment I will offer you care and support to help you relax.

Your treatment session is tailored to your individual needs and it will last approximately one hour though the first session may be longer as I will allocate time so we will have a greater opportunity to talk confidentially about the factors affecting you and your body. You can ask questions at anytime.

Following the discussion the touch, gentle stretches and movement element of the treatment takes place. This bodywork will facilitate you to become more aware of the places in which you are holding stresses and tensions. They will be encourages to release and relax.

Throughout the session you are fully clothed and will be lying on a comfortable padded mat however if you find it difficult to lie on the floor you can receive your treatment in a position that is suitable to you.

After a short relaxation time there will be time to share thoughts and feelings about the treatment.

You may find that the session assists you in identifying changes in your lifestyle that will help you to live well.

I will provide you with information about exercise and activities which may support this process.

About Me

I know much more about “me”, Lynn Hughes, now than I knew before I began my journey with Shiatsu 7 years ago. The joy of Shiatsu is that it helps me to appreciate how much there is to learn about living well! Sometimes I find receiving Shiatsu brings a tear to my eye or a smile to my lips. Generally, however, like most of my clients, I find it an extremely relaxing experience to be in my body and to breathe. It is also incredibly liberating to understand myself better.

Receiving Shiatsu helps when I have those stresses, aches and pains of every day life. It has also helped me when I have been experiencing much more difficult times either physically or emotionally - we can all have times like that. It assists me to recognise those behaviours that really do not help me. It also provides me with the confidence to do the things that are good for me. Not that I always get ‘the living’ right - I guess I wouldn’t be human or need Shiatsu if that were the case! Oh, and then sometimes I have Shiatsu just because I like it.

I find people so interesting. We are all similar, yet different. We celebrate our uniqueness in the way we appear. Our posture, speech, use of body language, the way we walk and dress, or relate to others, can all be indicators of how we are feeling. I have partly fallen upon by chance, and partly chosen a life path, where it has been necessary to understand behaviour and communication.

During my university studies in Human Communication I recognised that touch is a sense that we seem to honour less. As babies we are nurtured by touch and as we age this can often diminish more and more, though frequently we still have that need for connection. I have spent time as a volunteer working with people who had dementia and noticed that touch is a very natural, powerful and yet often ignored way to communicate. Whilst I was travelling in other countries I discovered that touch and massage is commonly used much more in other cultures than it is in our in our own. I somehow felt that I was missing out on something.

Then, I sampled Shiatsu and just loved receiving it. I decided that giving Shiatsu to others was what I would like to do with the next bit of my life.

So, this all brings me to where I am now. By combining my knowledge of communication with the skills that I have gained at the Devon School of Shiatsu, and adding a whole raft of life experience, I feel that I have a passion that I am sharing with others to help them to live well.

Whatever is happening in your life, if you feel that Shiatsu could help, please do not hesitate to get in touch. (the pun is intended).
