Welcome to Ruislip Chiropractic Clinic

Steve Jones

BSc(Chiro), D.C. Steve Jones has been in full time practice for ten years during which time he has trained extensively in Sacro-Occipital Technique (SOT) and holds the 'Advanced' qualification. He is also trained in cranial adjusting and paediatrics.

What Is Chiropractic?

Chiropractors are trained in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions which are due to mechanical dysfunction of the joints and their effects on the nervous system.

Chiropractors use their hands to adjust the joints of the spine and extremities where signs of restriction in movement are found; this improves mobility and relieves pain. The body's own healing processes (which we normally recognise in its ability to heal bruises, cuts and broken bones) will then be able to get on with the task of improving health. This treatment is known as 'adjustment' or 'manipulation'.
Poor, inadequate or incorrect function in the spine can cause irritation of the nerves that control posture and movement. This spinal nerve stress (which may be caused by factors such as accident, poor diet, lack of exercise, poor posture and anxiety) can lead to the symptoms of discomfort and pain.

By manipulating joints, chiropractors stimulate the joint movement receptors - the body's position sensors which provide feedback to the brain on where the joint is in space. This stimulation can affect the way the nervous system works. Depending on where the nerve irritation has occurred in the spine, symptoms may include the following:
  • headache or migraine
  • neck pain
  • back pain
  • shoulder, arm, wrist and hand problems
  • leg, knee, ankle and foot problems

This is because the irritation of the nerve in one area can sometimes lead to pain (known as 'referred' pain) in other parts of the body. Painful symptoms are a warning sign which should not be ignored; a chiropractor is trained to diagnose the cause, and if indicated treat using manipulation. Chiropractors do not prescribe drugs or use surgical procedures.

Common Techniques

SOT

SOT is an acronym for Sacro Occipital Technique. It is a method of chiropractic based primarily on the identification and treatment of three bodily systems: the cranial sacral respiratory system, the weight bearing system and the function of the lumbar spine.

A SOT chiropractor analyzes your body, concentrating on these three areas. They integrate large amounts of information, and then use several different techniques and approaches simultaneously, including the use of blocks, joint adjustment, organ/soft tissue reflex manipulation and cranial corrections.

SOT patients are also routinely given guidance regarding home care, diet, and nutrition.

Diversified

This is the most common non-specific technique used by most general practice chiropractors. It is a technique which may utilise more than one method. It will involve spinal adjustment, and generally results in a popping sound.

Applied Kinesiology

An examination technique which, through muscle strength testing, reveals the correct/incorrect functioning of the body's systems. This includes the correct/incorrect functioning of the spine and pelvis.

Activator Technique
Activator technique is a gentle, low-force program of chiropractic care that was developed in the late 1960s. The Activator technique uses a unique system of administering spinal adjustments using Activator analysis and an Activator instrument to initiate the correct movement of the vertebra in a predetermined direction.

Gait Scan Analysis

Structural problems in your feet can alter your walking pattern and cause pain throughout your body. At the clinic we can evaluate the way you walk (gait analysis) and determine if you are a candidate for prescription foot orthotics. Gaitscan will demonstrate, by computerised visual representation of your foot mechanics, how prescription orthotics work to restore proper foot function and relieve discomfort. The orthotics are transferrable between footwear and last about five years. This is because they are made from the highest quality materials (a memory thermoplastic which always returns to its original shape when deformed). Also, the Gaitscan system is unique in the world as the only system where the orthotic is produced directly from the scan, with no practitioner intervention, thereby providing a more accurate prescription.
