Jo Lewis BSc. (Hons) Lic. Ac. MBAcC covering Farnham & Alton
Jo has a four year BSc degree in Acupuncture from the highly respected College of Chinese Integrated Medicine. From a background in education, Jo's initial interest in Traditional Chinese Medicine was sparked after she sought treatment for insomnia, wanting a natural approach to its management instead of a chemical one. Through clinical practice Jo has seen at first hand the benefits acupuncture can bring to patients both as a single therapy and as a complementary approach to Western Medicine.
Jo's training allows her not only to address the patient's presenting symptoms, but also to use 5 Element theory to treat them on a deeper, constitutional level by working to restore their energetic balance. Lifestyle and dietary advice may also be offered if appropriate for the needs of particular patients.
Jo is a member of the British Acupuncture Council and is bound by their code of professional standards regarding confidentiality, data protection, health and safety and conduct. Jo is committed to continuing professional development in specialist areas of Chinese Medicine to enhance her existing knowledge and practical skills.
Jo can also be found at Durham House Chiropractic Clinic in Farnham, Surrey on Fridays. Here, Jo offers the same extensive range of treatments including cosmetic acupuncture. Information about location and pricing can be found at

Many patients choose acupuncture because of the time and attention practitioners can devote to really understanding their patient's health concerns and trying to get to the "root" of their condition. This is why the first consultation with Jo is generally longer than later sessions and why you may be asked questions about your health which may not appear to be connected to your immediate symptoms.
By gathering this information, taking pulses and looking at your tongue, Jo is able to draw up a diagnosis and an individualised treatment plan. This is an important advantage of Chinese Medicine because it views each patient as being wholly unique so their treatment is designed specifically to work for them.
On its simplest level Acupuncture is based on an understanding of the body's vital energy, or Qi, how it flows and the factors and conditions that cause it to become out of balance. The stresses and strains of modern living can take their toll causing energy to become depleted, disturbed or obstructed leading then to pain, illness and emotional disharmony. Needling, moxa and cupping are all used to encourage the healthy flow of Qi, restore balance and promote physical and emotional well being. That's why many patients also describe feeling generally "better in themselves" as a result of treatment.
For those people who may feel nervous about the use of needles, rest assured that they are high quality, ultra-fine, sterile and disposable. There are also other approaches that can be used instead of needling such as acupressure and cupping.
Acupuncture can treat a range of conditions, including;
- Allergic Rhinitis
- Back pain
- Chronic Fatigue
- Cold and Flu
- Facial pain
- Frozen shoulder
- Gastrointestinal disorders
- Menopausal Symptoms
- Menstrual problems
- Sports Injuries
- Type 2 diabetes
- Urinary Incontinence
Jo is also trained in Facial Enhancement Acupuncture which can provide a natural alternative to more invasive medical and chemical treatments. An initial consultation identifies the patient's specific area(s) of concern and Jo uses Traditional Chinese facial diagnosis based on skin colour, texture and firmness to pin point any internal imbalances that may be having an adverse effect. In Chinese Medicine it is stongly believed that the face reflects our internal health, not just the functioning of our organs, but also the negative impact that emotions can have on our skin.
Before needling the face is massaged using White Lotus brand serums, a Guasha tool and a jade roller. Then ultra fine, high quality needles are inserted in the appropriate points to stimulate circulation, improve muscle tone and encourage collagen production. Whether to help with wrinkles, acne, sagging or puffiness, this natural and holistic approach has been used for generations by women in Eastern cultures to encourage facial rejuvenation without the need for chemicals, fillers or surgery.
A course of 6- 8 weekly sessions are recommended to achieve optimum results folowed by monthly maintenance sessions depending on the needs of the client.
Please visit www.alternativeshealthclinic.co.uk for other therapies.
Depending on the condition being treated it is usually recommended that between 4 and 6 sessions are booked to maximise the therapeutic effect of the treatment. These are usually oganised on a weekly basis to begin with, but once the patient's symptoms improve the sessions may be moved further apart. Some patients use acupuncture for health maintenance once a month or have treatment seasonally.
Jo is on the register of several private health companies, but patients should consult the terms of their individual policies to determine whether or not acupuncture is covered. It is very important that patients find the right practitioner so please call for a no obligation chat to see if acupuncture is for you.
