Welcome
Solution focused coaching and hypnotherapy is a modern therapy which helps people to deal with emotional problems which are stopping them from getting the most out of their lives. You can read more about the approach on the ‘what happens in the sessions’ page.

The focus of the talking in the sessions after the initial consultation is on how people want their lives to be, rather than any problems they are experiencing. It doesn’t matter how old you are or how long you’ve had a problem, you can always change and move to a brighter future on with the right support.

Hypnotherapy helps harness the power of the unconscious mind and its effectiveness is supported by a wealth of research in neuroscience. This is often the part of the session clients look forward to the most!

All about me – my background and training
The common theme running through my career to date has been my commitment to working with people who need help to get their lives back on track.

Initially I trained as a Speech and Language Therapist and during my training I developed a fascination for Psychology and how the mind works. So, whilst working and raising my three lively daughters, I studied for a master’s degree in Psychology. I was able to apply my skills to a broad range of clients who had speech, language and communication difficulties as well as also those with specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia and dyspraxia. I developed a good understanding of how important it is to be client-centred and to focus on what people want to achieve out of life rather than the problem.

Moving on
Over the last 8 years I have had an enjoyable career in Higher Education teaching psychology to Speech and Language Therapy students. During my time in Higher Education, I became more and more interested in coaching students to manage their anxiety and negative beliefs about what they could achieve academically. I went on to train as a Solution focused Brief Practitioner at BRIEF in London four years ago. Since training I have worked with many students and have always been pleasantly surprised not only at how popular coaching is but how quickly they benefited from only a few sessions. Anything students do outside of their busy work schedule has to be worth their while!

I decided to further develop my skills and trained as a solution focused hypnotherapist at the Clifton Practice in Bristol. I have been impressed at how hypnosis has enhanced the solution focused coaching approach even further.

And Now
I am in independent practice in Malvern, Worcestershire and I welcome clients who would like to benefit from this enlightened and modern approach to rid themselves of troublesome emotional burdens which are preventing them from leading more fulfilled and happy lives. I also welcome people who have speech, language, communication and/or specific learning difficulties which have impacted on their confidence to get the most out of their lives.

I am a member of or registered with the following organisations:
  • The Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT)
  • The Health and Care Professions Council HCPC)
  • The British Psychological Society (BPS)
  • UK Association for Solution Focused Practitioners (UKASFP)
  • Association for Solution Focused Hypnotherapists (ASFHP)

What is solution focused coaching?
What is solution focused coaching?

In 1986 a group of therapists at the Brief Family Centre in Milwaukee published a paper outlining the beginning of a new and very different way of working therapeutically. This team was led by Steve de Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg.

Traditionally, therapy has been about detailing people’s problems and exploring the causes of the problem in order to help resolve it.

However, De Shazer said that instead the client needed to only focus on how they would know when the problem was resolved. This meant a whole new style of language – solution building rather than problem solving.

from therapy to coaching

Coaching has grown in popularity particularly in the workplace. Work is of key importance in people’s lives and it is likely this will come up as something they want to talk about when they seek therapy. Practitioners trained in the solution focused approach have been finding it a great way of talking to people in lots of situations in life, not just in therapy. In a roundabout way, coaching has now spread back into therapy as an alternative way of helping people to gain control of their emotions and lives which is solution focused rather than problem focused. This is a refreshing change for many people who have lived with their difficulties for a long time and are tired of telling their painful stories over and over again. Focusing forward to the future which you can influence and away from the past which you can’t can be liberating.

Imagine thinking about a time when you succeeded at something e.g. passing your driving test. Remember how it made you feel and how it motivated you to look forward to trying new things in life in the future. Now think about a time you have failed at something. this makes you feel very different – closing you down and making you reluctant to try again.
