Welcome to Contour Pilates
I am a qualified Pilates teacher with over 5 year’s experience. I am registered with the REPS (Register of Exercise Professionals) and a member of the Body Control Pilates Association. Both organisations set exceptionally high standards and require their members to take part in regularly assessments to ensure continual professional development as well as professional ethics.
I specialise in the teaching of ‘Body Control Pilates’. Through this form of Pilates I will teach you good movement skills step by step. I will also help you understand the theory of Pilates and help you learn skills which you can then transfer into every day life. You will be taught in a maximum class size of twelve, ensuring close supervision and support.
For those who want to exercise in the comfort of their own home, either individually or in small groups, I also offer private sessions which are tailor made to meet your individual needs.
Overall I enjoy the challenge of helping clients benefit from Pilates and also continuing my own professional development as a teacher. I feel privileged to work with all my clients and I want them to gain as much as they can from Pilates.
History of Pilates
Joseph Pilates was born in Dusseldorf in 1880 and lived to the great age of 87. However, as a child he suffered from asthma, rheumatic fever and rickets. His determination to succeed came through at an early age, as he decided to experiment with different fitness approaches rather than the established regime of the time. These were: weight training, yoga, dance, circus training, self defence, gymnastics and skiing. Their influence can be seen in many of his exercises today.
Pilates further developed his method during the First World War. He then opened his studio in New York during the 1920’s which attracted dancers, actors and athletes. They found the Pilates method built strength, but without the added bulk, a balance between strength and flexibility, achieving harmony between mind and body.
What is different about the Pilates exercises?
Pilates is a body-condition method that works in a different way to other fitness techniques. Targeting the deep postural muscles, it works by building strength from the inside out, rebalancing the body and bringing it into correct alignment. It helps to reshape your body which will become longer, leaner and more toned. It will also improve your posture, achieving the perfect balance between strength and flexibility, and is a great way to relieve unwanted stress and tension.

My group matwork classes are limited to a maximum of 12 people to ensure a safe learning experience.

Since joining Melanie’s Pilates class, my physical and mental strengths have improved. Melanie’s calm approach to teaching is enabling me to understand the technique of breathing correctly whilst performing challenging exercises. I find Pilates to be both stimulating and relaxing to mind and body.
I’ve been having Pilates lessons with Melanie for less than a year, and have been pleasantly surprised to benefit so much already from doing Pilates. The emphasis on correct alignment of the body helped me to walk with my legs and feet correctly and cured within weeks a knee problem I’d had for over a year!
Even though I find some of the exercises challenging, I’ve noticed that waists of my skirts and trousers are looser now and that my core muscles are getting stronger!
Having endured years of back pain, sciatica and leg cramp I am delighted and relieved to say that Contour Pilates has changed all that.
Sessions with Melanie are friendly and helpful – not many in a class and a feeling at all times of one to one encouragement.
I have no hesitation in recommending Melanie – even to those of advanced years as I am! Give it a go – it may change your quality of life as it has mine.
Pilates and Melanie helped me through a particularly difficult and stressful patch in my life. Apart from liberating me from various aches, pains, and stretching until then, unknown muscles, it also gave me an oasis of peace, time and space to concentrate on myself, under a calm, attentive and experienced teacher that Melanie is.
I have been a regular in Melanie’s classes since 2005 and can not imagine any different. To anyone who is doubtful or undecided about whether to take a class, well there is only one way to find out … join our small group for a weekly hour of total harmony. You deserve and get the best here…
