The Barefoot Medicine Approach
Because our 'health' is made up of the state of our mind, body, spirit, the environment in which we live, as well as our inter-personal relationships, a wide range of treatments and services are offered to enhance all aspects of your well-being.
At Barefoot Medicine, we believe in treating the individual with what they need at the time that they need it. This means that rather than book an acupuncture treatment or 'a massage', you will have a consultation with your practitioner and she will advise which treatment is the most appropriate. The cost to you will be the same. This means, for example, that if you have musculo-skeletal problems, it could be that a combination of (electro-)acupuncture, massage, heat therapy, acutaping and cupping may be appropriate.
Equally, if you have a complex condition such as PTSD, there may be times when the physical manifestations arc dominant EG pain or injury, then at other times the sleep is what needs addressing. We believe the flexibility in this approach will help you get the most appropriate treatment at the right time.
Treatment will typically involve acupuncture, but the following is also available: electro-acupuncture, Chinese herbal remedies (internal and topical), sports massage, Swedish massage Indian Head Massage, Thai yoga therapy, meditation, relaxation and creative visualization and crucially dietary and lifestyle advice.
Your first consultation will last around an hour and a half, during which time we will discuss general and specific health issues as well as your sleep patterns, work schedule, diet and lifestyle, then we will go on to agree upon your treatment goals.
With these goals in mind, a treatment strategy will be drawn up that is tailored to meet your needs, time constraints and any hospital appointments you may have in relation to your overall healthcare plan. We will review these goals together every five treatments to ensure you are getting what you need and make any adjustments or referrals as appropriate.
