SERVICES
Need to work through a problem or reach your potential?what we think about our abilities affects what we do – find realistic inspiration and aspiration; feel more motivated; increase confidence and competence/

Wilma Stewart is a psychological therapist with an extensive range of experience (22 years) and qualifications, she is also a practised supervisor of counsellors and therapists. The service provides Counselling, Psychotherapy, Stress Management, Hypnotherapy, Neuro-Linguistic Programming, Art Psychotherapy and Corporate and Occupational Health input. The appointments, in or very near Lerwick, are in comfortable, relaxed and private settings.

Wilma prefers to work independently and privately outside the local statutory agencies, ensuring that client’s needs, safety, confidentiality and privacy are honoured to the greatest degree possible adhering to professional health and safety guidelines.

With 22 years professional service including children and care homes, criminal justice and the prison service, working with homeless, the voluntary sector, mental health establishments, city counselling services, staff welfare, corporate referrals eg the oil industry/NATS/universities etc, Wilma has successfully dealt with a wide range of individuals and issues, and has an ongoing commitment to personal development and training, putting her in a fortunate position to offer clients therapeutic support.

Where issues arise that are outside her ability to help, or her knowledge, will know where to refer on to and will happily do so.

Corporate and Occupational Health

  • CONSULTANCY
  • SUPPORT
  • TECHNIQUES
  • HELP
  • STAFF WELFARE
  • ORGANISATIONAL DYNAMICS
  • STRESS MANAGEMENT COUNSELLING

Direct and indirect symptoms of stress fall under four headings:
  • mental signs
  • emotional signs
  • behavioural signs
  • physical signs

Under each of these there is a long list ranging from tiredness; palpitations; feeling tense; irritability; having no enthusiasm; to being unable to unwind; drinking more alcohol; losing interest in sex…the lists are long and often contradictory.

Taking no action when something seems not quite as it should be can lead into a negative spiral of very serious long term illness, or worse.

The value of dealing with workplace unhappiness in the early stages is immeasurable. Ankortherapy provides quality – a range of skills applied over 22 years including within a city counselling service specialising in occupational health, numerous GP referrals, and a significant body of work for staff welfare. The skills include listening in a particular focussed way that has developed from working at the extreme end of mental ill health, to dealing with seemingly light issues that have affected people’s lives in a way that has maybe pulled the carpet from under them and made the future seem bleak.

Deep relaxation techniques help in a way that is surprising to people who have never considered such things before/maybe even dismissed it. It can, for instance, greatly improve sleep, dispel panic attacks, begin to develop ‘calm’ feelings as opposed to feeling uptight…..there are many applications. In a second session the client is also given techniques to use themselves.

Creative approaches can be very helpful for a host of presenting problems including eg trauma, and with group work. Working with organisational dynamics provides insight into issues and can enable ways forward out of ‘stuck’ situations. Some organisations will be familiar with ‘mind maps‘ - Art psychotherapy takes thinking ‘outside the box’ that bit further since it taps on unconscious, underdeveloped aspects of the person that may be dismissed, unacknowledged or ignored. It can help an honesty of interaction begin to take place.

Use the navigation options above to find out about my methods.

It is precisely that mix that enables a way in to help the individual and allows for difference in people and a range of ways to reach people in order that they may express themselves.

It is of enormous benefit to companies to have more contented, happier staff who feel appreciated for the work they do and who feel they are doing a job worthwhile. For instance, output is likely to be greater and absence is likely to reduce.

Advanced Hypnotherapy Shetland

Hypnotherapy induces a deep state of relaxation during which our subconscious minds become highly receptive to positive or new ideas. This is similar to the altered state which we experience when we daydream, or go about normal daily tasks on auto-pilot. If you want to change unwanted behaviours or habits, hypnotherapy can be a powerful means of doing so.
Hypnotherapy with a suitably qualified and experienced practitioner should always be safe, ethical and deeply relaxing, demonstrating respect for the individuals dignity.

Hypnotherapy can help you to:
  • overcome addictions
  • overcome alcohol problems
  • overcome drug
  • dependencies
  • stop smoking
  • ease IBS
  • sleep better
  • reduce stress
  • tackle phobias
  • reduce anxiety
  • manage anger
  • lose panic attacks
  • build confidence
  • improve performance e.g. sport
  • improve your golf / shooting
  • ease depression
  • lessen exam/interview worries
  • lose unwanted habits e.g. nailbiting/hairpulling
  • remove fears e.g. dentist/needles
  • lose weight
  • relieve the effects of more serious issues eg PTSD
  • be more motivated
  • work through emotional problems
  • alleviate exam nerves
  • overcome agoraphobia
  • overcome claustrophobia
  • stop teeth clenching/grinding

Hypnotherapy and Neuro Linguistic Programming combined can provide powerful Motivational Coaching. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and Brief Solutions Focussed Therapy also help in this by focussing on the solution rather than the problem.

Extensive direct client work since 1998.

Please note that Hypnotherapy is not suitable for persons who suffer from epilepsy or psychosis .

Stress Management

have a particular interest in stress management and how stress unwittingly creeps up on people with sometimes devastating consequences. Employers have legal and statutory responsibilities toward the mental wellbeing of their staff hence the growth of stress management in recent years.

Words from a client on the benefits of receiving stress management:

’Modern employment places increasing levels of stress on everyone, and whilst some stress is supposed to be good for us, reaction to stress varies greatly from one person to another. Having access to the type of services provided by Wilma at ankortherapy.co.uk can allow stress to be managed and reduced quickly, giving employees tools to help themselves and leading to a happier workplace with reduced absence. Referring staff to Wilma where they have expressed a desire or shown a need for support is a successful and cost effective way to reduce employee stress levels and allow them to release their potential’.
(male service user)

I trained in Stress Management at King’s College University, London. However, it is not the training that has proved most useful but rather an amalgam of over 22 years of experience in therapeutic settings. This has included a busy city centre counselling service which has an emphasis on occupational health for the oil industry, national air traffic control, staff at colleges and universities, the police service and much more. The recent and significant number of stress related referrals from GPs has deepened and broadened my understanding and ability to work effectively with the debilitating impact of stress.

Psychotherapy and Counselling

It would be easy to describe the benefits of psychotherapy and counselling as well as the differences between them but in order to avoid repetition please refer to the Tavistock (widely considered to be the centre of excellence for psychotherapy in the UK).

I carry an approach to work by striving to create the best possible conditions to balance in the most supportive, open way whatever is difficult for the person. It is usually already a major step to have taken to come and see someone. A safe, supportive and private environment helps clients feel more at ease and therefore more able to share and explore whatever the issues are.

My approach is client led and works with and for the client to enable them to identify for themselves their needs and difficulties and what strengths and resources they have to deal with them.

Sometimes simply listening is what the person requires; another time I will encourage them to find new, creative , and innovative ways of drawing on their own strengths. Ultimately the aim is that the person works through the difficulties emerging stronger, more secure and regaining hope for the future. In some cases people will choose to make significant and positive changes in their lives.

Psychotherapy and Counselling can help you deal with issues concerning:
  • Self esteem
  • Bullying
  • Anxiety
  • Stress
  • Seeking change
  • Anger
  • Relationship issues
  • Bereavement
  • Feeling incompetent
  • Eating disorders
  • Dependencies generally
  • Depression
  • Managing change
  • Sexuality
  • Abuse – sexual, physical, emotional
  • Rape
  • Self harm
  • Trauma
  • Illness
  • Family breakdown
  • Emotional problems

Art Psychotherapy

Art Psychotherapy, contrary to popular belief, helps words come where sometimes previously they would not. It is a shift away from the purely verbal and this aids and abets expression in a special way. Service users have often commented how they felt a kind of release that enabled them to speak more than they had felt able to in counselling.

No art skills are required for anyone seeking art therapy/psychotherapy.

The safe reflective space and focus encourages insight and facilitates change. It can sometimes have an immediacy about it hence the thorough training and protected title. It has an ability to distance and objectify, and conversely, to get below the surface. “A picture tells a thousand stories” is often bandied about and this is particularly so in a safe, held therapeutic space – the therapist facilitates the process rather than makes interpretations.

Art Psychotherapy can help you with everything that you would seek a counsellor or psychotherapist for plus more serious mental health issues:
  • Self esteem
  • Bullying
  • Anxiety
  • Stress
  • Seeking change
  • Anger
  • Relationship issues
  • Bereavement
  • Feeling incompetent
  • Eating disorders
  • Dependencies generally
  • Depression
  • Managing change
  • Sexuality
  • Abuse – sexual, physical, emotional
  • Rape
  • Self harm
  • Trauma
  • Illness
  • Family breakdown
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
  • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Emotional problems
  • And other significant mental health issues
  • Please note that users of this service do not need art skills.

Up until 2 years ago supervision was from a psychiatrist and psychoanalytic psychotherapist of over thirty years experience and more recently from the head of an art psychotherapy department within a psychiatric hospital with even longer experience.

My experience working in this field has included 4 years p/t placement in a psychiatric hospital working with the sharp end of mental illness and mental health and since then, 18 years many thousands of hours direct therapy for a very wide range of presenting problems. This includes numerous referrals from GPs, the social work department as well as child and adolescent referrals via the education department.
