Traditional Acupuncture

Acupuncture can improve your health whatever your condition. It does this by balancing your vital energies (rather like tuning a car so that it runs smoothly and doesn’t develop faults). In other words it can be used to treat and prevent many kinds of disease from rheumatic and arthritic problems to depression, high blood pressure, back pain and stress. You should see overall improvements in your health, not only in the main complaint, but other minor aches and pains will clear up and there could be additional benefits, such as improved sleep, more energy and a general feeling of well being.

This system of medicine has been used in China to restore and maintain health for more than 3,000 years, and depends fundamentally on treating the whole person in body, mind and spirit.

...........................................

What is treatment like?

Hair-fine, stainless steel needles are inserted millimetres below the surface of the skin, to stimulate or influence the flow of Qi [energy]. The actual insertion of the needle is often not felt by the patient (it is nothing like an injection), but changes in the energy flow may be felt, and can cause momentary discomfort but the sensation is quite acceptable to most people.

Only a few needles will be inserted in any one treatment, which is likely to last for between 20 and 40 minutes. It is impossible to say how many treatments will be required to restore someone to health. Much depends on the type of problem and length of time experienced but tangible benefits are often felt after only a few treatments, and visits may then be spaced until you visit your acupuncturist just for a seasonal check-up and adjustment, rather as you might go to the dentist.

...........................................

Your first visit

On your first visit, the acupuncturist spends up to an hour or more asking questions about your present state of health, family history, lifestyle, likes and dislikes. This, plus careful observation of your physical characteristics and the taking of your pulses (there are twelve acupuncture pulses, six on the inside of each wrist) provides a detailed profile of your energy flow. and possible blocks or imbalances.

This should tell the practitioner which meridians (energy pathways) to work on. There are twelve main meridians and hundreds of key points along them, all over the body. You should not be surprised if needles are used on a completely different part of the body from where you experiencing a problem or feel unwell.

...........................................

How you can help

It is helpful to take your diagnosis details and any medications you are currently taking to your consultation. On days when you are being treated, it is good to observe the following guidelines:
  1. Do not take a hot bath up to four hours before or after the treatment;

  2. Do not eat a heavy meal, or drink any alcohol, before or after the treatment;

  3. Do not do anything, which is emotionally or physically taxing, before or after the treatment;

  4. Allow sufficient time so as not to arrive rushed or hurried for the treatment and take things quietly for an hour or so afterwards.

...........................................

How do you choose an acupuncturist?

Personal recommendation is ideal, the practitioners membership of a professional association is a helpful guide. It is for you to make enquiries about the length and quality of a particular practitioner’s training, and for you to decide if you are being cared for in a manner and style which you would wish.

Acupuncture is not just having needles stuck in you to cure this or that complaint. It has to be carried out within its own system of diagnosis and evaluation by a skilled and caring practitioner. Michael will be happy to talk to you, without any obligation on your part, before you decide whether to have treatment. This can be over the phone or in a face to face consultation in clinic.

I have Visited Michael for an ongoing problem for a little while.
He is extremely professional and courteous. He has a private treatment room that is comfortable and informal. I always feel relaxed by his friendly manner and leave my appointment feeling boyant and energised.
I would highly recommend Michael's treatments for anyone. He also offers neck and shoulder massage or full back massage in which he is fully trained and certified.
