About you and me

So, what are you doing on the ‘About me’ page?

Well, as you’re here to read about my journey to great health and vitality, I thought you’d like to know how I can support you with yours.

My name is Adele Appleton and I’ve been practicing complementary therapies for over 10 years now. However, back in 2013 I had my own health crisis when a brain scan showed signs of Multiple Sclerosis. The neurologist advised me that although I didn’t have MS yet, I had a higher chance of developing it possibly within 5 years and there was nothing I could do to prevent it.

Now luckily for me I like a challenge, and refused to believe that there was nothing to be done but to sit and wait for MS to take over my life. So, after many hours of research I changed my diet, and used various techniques to heal on an emotional and spiritual level (that took minutes to write but months to do!). The result? I cleared up some chronic ailments and feel better and have more energy now than I have done for many years!

This life changing event has taught me about the effect of food on the body – it can be the most powerful form of medicine or the slowest form of poison. Spurred on by what I had learned I decided to train as a nutritional therapist, and I’m now on a mission in life to help people find their own healing pathways, and share with them the tools and techniques that have worked for me.

If you’re inspired by my journey and would like to have a chat about how I can help you with yours, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Adele xx

Oh and the MS? A recent brain scan showed no further deterioration – a great result!

Nutritional Therapy

What is Nutritional Therapy?

In a nutshell, a nutritional therapist will identify your nutritional needs through discussion, observation, lifestyle analysis and, if necessary laboratory testing. They treat the person as a whole and not the condition itself, working to address any nutrient imbalances and promote health and well-being. Nutritional therapy always strives to identify the root cause of any health complaint, rather than simply managing the symptoms.

Who can benefit?

Nutritional therapy can help alleviate and manage a wide range of conditions and improve the health outcomes of many individuals. But you don’t have to be sick to benefit- It is also a great preventative tool and a way of maintaining good health. This becomes more important as we age. Wouldn’t it be great to enter our golden years full of energy, with flexible joints and without a whole list of medications in tow!

Some of the areas you might seek support for include:
  • Energy levels
  • Allergies and intolerances
  • Hormonal healthcare
  • Mood Imbalances – anxiety, depression
  • Boosting immunity
  • Skin conditions
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome
  • IBS
  • Weight loss and management
  • Food cravings
  • Preconception care and fertility
  • Menopause
  • Managing a health condition
  • Healthy aging

Consultation

What can I expect from a consultation with Adele?

  1. This starts when you phone me and we have a chat about whatever is going on for you.
  2. I then email you a diet diary to complete and return prior to your consultation. This is a really important step as it allows me to see what nutrients you are putting in your body, and what you might be missing out on. It also allows us to make the most of our time together when we meet.
  3. You come to my cosy log cabin in Poynton and over a cup of herbal tea we go through a comprehensive consultation form, looking at your past and present medical history. We go through your diet diary and discuss any supplements and tests that may be helpful.
I believe in educating my clients – I will never ask you to do something without explaining how and why it’s going to benefit you.

Before you go I book you in for a follow up appointment in 2-6 weeks, depending on your need.

  1. Over the next 48 hours I go through all the information you have given me, and put together a comprehensive food led plan including meal suggestions, lifestyle interventions and supplement recommendations. All plans are designed to be workable and motivating.
  2. You’re ready to start your exciting journey to achieve your health goals – but you are not alone! I am contactable by email, text or phone call if you have any questions and remember – Rome wasn’t built in a day – it’s probably taken years for whatever health condition you may have to develop, so it’s not going to disappear overnight. Small permanent changes reap great long-term results and that’s just what we’re aiming for – long term good health.

Food Intolerance Testing:

What is food intolerance?

Food intolerance can result from your body reacting badly to certain foods. Often the foods we include regularly in our diet or the foods we crave may be the ones causing us a problem. Research has shown that food intolerances can be linked to IgG antibodies produce when these ‘problem foods’ are eaten. Normally these antibodies do not have any ill-effects, but if the immune or digestive system are. Not working optimally, their presence may cause a wide range of symptoms.

How do I know if I have a food intolerance?

Ask yourself if you have any of the following chronic unpleasant symptoms:
  • Bloating
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhoea
  • Flatulence\headaches
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Lethargy
  • Migraine
  • Nausea
  • Stomach cramps/abdominal pain
  • Eczema
  • arthritis
What can I do about it?

Talk to Adele about doing a Food Detective test as part of your consultation. Many people experience an improvement in symptoms and health after changing their diet based on their Food Detective results. Like any diagnostic test, Food Detective will only produce meaningful results if you are experiencing symptoms. Some symptoms of food intolerance could be due to other health issues and it is important to see your doctor to rule these out.

Why should I do a test?

Reduce symptoms quickly.

Symptoms can persist for several days or longer, making it difficult to identify which foods your body is struggling to deal with.

The Food Detective test helps to identify these ‘problem’ foods by detecting IgG antibodies in your blood. Using these results as a guide you and your health care professional can then adjust and plan your new diet.

What is Food Detective?

Food Detective is a test which Adele can perform during your consultation, by taking a pin prick of blood. It tests for IgG antibodies which can be associated with food intolerance. It gives quick results empowering you to take control of your health.

Foods tested

Food Detective tests for reactions to the following foods:
  • Corn, Durum Wheat, Gluten, Oats, Rice, Rye, Wheat
  • Freshwater Fish Mix (salmon, trout), Shellfish Mix (shrimp, prawn, crab, lobster, mussel), Tuna, White Fish Mix (haddock, cod, plaice)
  • Apple, Blackcurrant, Grapefruit, Melon Mix (cantaloupe, watermelon), Olive, Orange & Lemon, Strawberry, Tomato
  • Beef, Chicken, Lamb, Pork
  • Cow’s Milk, Egg (whole)
  • Almond, Brazil, Cashew, Peanut, Walnut
  • Broccoli, Cabbage, Carrot, Celery, Cucumber, Leek, Legume Mix (pea, lentil, haricot), Peppers (red, green, yellow), Potato, Soya Bean
  • Cocoa Bean, Garlic, Ginger, Mushroom, Tea, Yeast
What happens after the test?

Adele will work with you to create a diet which eliminates our problem foods, offer healthy alternatives and guidance on how to re-introduce foods. Typically, a customised diet will be followed for around 3 months to allow the symptoms to subside and give the body time to recover.

Reflexology

Reflexology is a deeply relaxing and re-energising therapy. As far back as ancient Egypt people recognised the health benefits to be gained from applying pressure to certain points on the hands and feet known as ‘reflexes’ which correspond to specific organs, glands and other parts of the body. By applying gentle pressure to these points, energy blockages in the body can be released, promoting the ideal circumstances for the body to heal itself.

How can reflexology help you? Reflexology can help you cope with stress on a physical, mental and emotional level. Energy is cleared from body tissues enabling the release of ‘negative energy’. Physical toxins can be cleared and it works to restore health to the entire being. Anyone can benefit from the clearning brought about by a reflexology treatment.

Reflexology is suitable for all ages and may bring relief from a wide range of acute and chronic conditions. While reflexology works very well alongside conventional medicine, it should never be used in place of seeking medical advice. Reflexology does not treat or diagnose any specific medical disorder, however studies have been done on reflexology and insomnia, back pain, high blood pressure and anxiety. Please see the links page to read more. There are also some links to interesting articles on reflexology and fertility.

Your reflexology sessions at Poynton Holistic clinic are all about restoring balance . The treatment will work to clear your symptoms by restoring vitality to your entire being. The more you relax, the more this can happen.

I am also trained in Verticle Reflex Therapy, which has recently been given a prestigious award by the Institute of Complementary and Natural Medicine, for it’s outstanding contribution to complementary medicine.

Please feel free to telephone me for a chat if you are unsure if reflexology would be suitable for you.

Swedish Body Massage

Most of us underestimate the power of massage, seeing it as a pleasurable experience, but unlikely to change our lives. In fact, subconsciously, we rely enormously on our sense of touch. Throughout our lives we need physical contact in order to feel accepted, secure and loved.

In Swedish Body Massage all the strokes relate to the body’s circulatory and lymphatic systems. In this way they help to encourage the body’s organs and systems to function normally and speed the healing process of damaged tissue. During the massage I use oils to facilitate smooth, gliding stokes and a gentle to medium pressure and muscle manipulation to promote relaxation and ease out tension.

I always tailor the session to meet your needs – I don’t simply follow a set routine. Some clients prefer a deeper pressure, particularly in areas where tension is often held, whereas others prefer a light, relaxing stroke so they can drift off somewhere nice and simply enjoy the sensation of touch – it’s up to you.

I am also trained in Advanced Massage (deep tissue) using trigger point, and neuromuscular techniques. This enables me to locate and release knots and areas of solid tension, characteristic of extended periods of driving or sitting at desks. The pressure used in a deep tissue massage is medium to firm.

I have also recently completed the practitioners course in No Hands massage – the dynamic new form of massage that is sweeping across the world as one of the most powerful new theraputic massage treatments available.

Bad back and neck issues? I have developped a 90 minute treatment which focuses specifically on the back and neck using a combination of deep tissue massage and reflexology. The first 60 minutes focus on using deep tissue massage techniques to get right into areas of tension on the back and neck. I also incorporate gentle neck manipulation and stretches. You can then completely relax and enjoy 30 minutes of reflexology focusing on the back and neck reflexes. Altogether a powerful combination.

Some of the benefits of Massage are:
  • It improves blood circulation which delivers oxygen and nutrients to cells
  • Stimulates the lymphatic system which carries away waste products – this can help reduce the unsightly appearance of cellulite and enhance the immune system
  • Release endorphins – amino acids that work as the body’s natural painkiller
  • Prevents and relieves muscle cramps and spasms and aids joint mobility
  • Alleviate back pain and improve range of motion
  • Can help with pain management such as sciatica, muscle spasms and arthritis
  • A vigorous massage on the upper back and chest area can help loosen mucous from the lungs
  • It is a deeply relaxing treatment that can help with stress management
  • It encourages the whole body to relax which can help promote deep and refreshing sleep
If you have any questions about whether a Swedish Body Massage is right for you, don’t hesitate to give me a ring for an informal chat.

Hot Stones Massage

Hot stone massage is an exciting massage treatment sweeping the country. Smooth basalt stones are heated, oiled and applied to the body as an extension of the therapists hands. The warmth from the stones penetrates and relaxes the muscles, allowing the therapist to apply deeper pressure if desired.

Stone therapy has been used for over 2000 years. Ancient chinese, Egyptians and American Indians used hot and cold stones for healing, whilst Roman baths involved hot water and hot and cold stones to lie on.

Hot stone therapy goes beyond the physical experience of typical massage and enters deeper dimensions of relaxation, health and well being.

Once you experience the incredible sensations that can only be attained with these stones, you will never go back to regular massage.

A one hour hot stones treatment includes the back, neck shoulders and back of the legs. For a full body massage with hot stones, a 90 minute appointment is required.

Therapists usually charge more for a hot stone massage, however as a special promotion, I am offering a hot stone massage for the same price as a Swedish massage!

Indian Head Massage

Indian Head Massage has been practised in India for over a thousand years. It was brought to the west in the 1970’s when the therapy was extended to include the shoulders, neck, upper arms and face.

As we tend to spend most of our time in our heads, this treatment can really help calm the mind and is surprisingly deeply relaxing. As well as relieving muscular tension, it calms the spirit, improves blood circulation to the head, enhances the senses and promotes clear thinking.

The massage begins with the upper back and shoulders to relax the muscles and melt knots. Next the upper arms are worked using a combination of friction and compression. Moving up to the neck where gentle effleurage helps to relieve tension which can cause headaches and improves blood flow to the head. The scalp is massaged next using techniques that stimulate, relax and revive the whole of the head, increasing circulation and promoting healthy hair. Finally the treatment ends with a gentle face massage using techniques and acupressure points that help circulation, skin tone, sinus problems and promote lymphatic drainage.

This therapy is very popular and can be performed with or without oils, either lying on a massage couch or with the client fully clothed in an upright massage chair, which makes it a very popular choice for the workplace.

Benefits of an Indian Head Massage include:
  • Some clients have reported improvement of migraine, headaches and sinus conditions
  • Improved quality and quantity of sleep
  • Improved suppleness and flexibility to head, neck and shoulders
  • Increase of oxygen to the brain aiding clearer thinking and improved memory
  • Calms the respiratory system which may help with breathing related disorders
  • Promotes a sense of calmness, peace and tranquility
  • Release from anxiety, stress and mental strain
  • Renewed energy
  • Improved levels of concentration
  • Chakra balancing and energetic healing
